Top two teams faceoff in boys LSSAA hockey
andrew brethauer February 9th, 2011

The top two teams in LSSAA boys hockey  faced off Wednesday afternoon as the St. Christopher's Cyclones tried to keep their undefeated season alive, while LCCVI looked to leap frog them for first place.

LCCVI came out looking for the win, as early on they kept the puck in the Cyclone zone and tested goaltender Andrew Ganter. The Cyclones early chance came from league leading scorer Corey Pawley, who used his speed to get around the Lancer defence but fell behind the net as he went for a wrap-around.

Coming back the other direction Ryan Trottier had a breakaway chance with the Cyclone defence trying to tie him up. Trottier would get the shot off but it would go wide of the net, and another chance soon after couldn't be put over the pad of Ganter, who continued to stop the Lancer attack.

Despite the play being in the Cyclone zone, the Lancers would be the first to give up a goal. Pawley would receive a pass from the corner that he would put on net. The rebound was caught in the air by Ben Morrison who brought it back down to his stick and jammed in the net passed Brad Jacklin for the 1-0 Cyclone lead.

After the first the shots were tied 9-9.

To start the second period the St. Christopher's would get the powerplay, but getting shots to the net spelled a problem for the Cyclones, as LCCVI got into the shooting lanes, taking away any chance at a goal. Despite being on the penalty kill, the Lancers outshot the Cyclones 6-1 in the first five minutes of the period.

When LCCVI had a powerplay chance, Trottier had another chance alone in front off the faceoff but his deke couldn't get passed Ganter.

But just as the powerplay play ends it would be Travis Rops would puts a feed home to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Cyclones would get three good scoring chances, but Jacklin would shut the door or the shots would go wide, as the Cyclones could hardly muster a shot onto the net.

LCCVI was getting the puck onto the net, but Ganter would gather up the rebounds or the Cyclones were not able to put the rebounds in as the second period ended in a 1-1 tie. The Lancers got 14 shots in the period compared to 4 by the Cyclones.

To start the third the Cyclones would start to get a great chance to score but Jacklin would turn it aside. Coming back the other on a 3 on 2, the Lancers would be the ones to shoot the puck wide.

But it wouldn't take long for the Lancers to retake their lead, as while they were killing a penalty, as Troy Whitely got a breakaway chance off a block shot and deked Ganter, sliding it low blocker side to put the Lancers up 2-1 in the middle of the third.

The Cyclones would get a final chance to tie the game and would pull the goalie putting six on the ice. Pietro Restivo would send a shot on net from the blue line which would hit the glass and bounce back in front of the net where Randy Harding would jam the puck into the net and tie the game with ten seconds remaining in the period as the game ends in a 2-2 tie.

With the tie, St. Christopher's holds the first place spot in the league while LCCVI is in second. Playoffs begin next week with LCCVI taking on St. Clair and St. Christopher's taking on Northern.
