Emily
Houle and Liam Young, both 13, and Eric Cardinal,
11, of the Sarnia Y Rapids I swim team earned
first-place finishes in individual events at a SEAL
(St. Clair Erie Aquatic League) meet in Wallaceburg
in January. Eric’s firsts were in the 50m
backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. He
added a 4th-place finish in the 100m Individual
Medley (IM). Emily placed first in the 100m IM, and
400m freestyle, and also placed 3rd, 4th, and 5th in
the 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke and 50m
butterfly respectively. Liam finished first in the
50m butterfly, and added ribbons in the 100m IM and
400m freestyle (2nd), and 100m backstroke (5th).
Joining them at this SEAL (St. Clair Erie Aquatic
League) meet were 25 other swimmers from the Rapids
team.
Liam’s brother, Luke Young, 11, earned ribbons in
each of his individual events. He placed 4th in the
50m backstroke and 400m freestyle, 5th in the 50m
backstroke and 6th in the 100m IM and 50m
breaststroke. Nadine Osmon, 9, placed 3rd in the 25m
butterfly and 50m freestyle, 5th in the 100m IM and
6th in the 25m backstroke, while Samantha Bedard,
also 9, earned 4th place in the 100m IM and 5th
place in the 25m butterfly, 25m backstroke and 50m
freestyle. Kaiden Rawson, 8, placed 2nd in the 25m
breaststroke and 5th in the 100m IM and 25m
butterfly. Hannah Lacey, 10, finished 6th in the 50m
breaststroke and 400m freestyle. Latashia Dutcher,
13, earned a 3rd place finish in the 400m freestyle.
Dylan Cloud came 5th in the 25m backstroke, while
Sophie Stasyna, 13, finished 5th in the 400m
freestyle.
In addition, 20 swimmers showed time improvements
over previous meets in at least one event. Nes
Tulang, 9, took 18 seconds off her previous 100m IM
time. Trista Walsh, 10, improved her 100m freestyle
time by 13 seconds. Samantha Lefebvre, 11, bested
her previous time for the 100m IM by 16 seconds,
while Jena Devine, 10, took 15 seconds off her
previous time for the 50m breaststroke. Hayley
Robertson, 11, improved her 100m freestyle time by
almost 10 seconds, and also shaved time off three
other events over previous. Ciara Brown and Erin
Lacey, 8, Ally Core, 9, and Anna Derech, 10, each
improved their times in three events, over the
previous meet, while Emma Devine, 9, improved in two
events. Hunter Small, 11, had 4 top 10 finishes.
It was the first meet for Ayrianna Batson, 7, and
Madison Mckinlay, 12. Also swimming were Lauren
Murray, 9, Magaidh Crossland, 12, Courtney Murray,
12, Janelle Joosten, 13.
