Sting Minor Atom blank Kitchener
sarniasports.com February 8th, 2011

Hunter Monkhouse scored three goals and Liam McCarthy stopped all 21 shots he faced as the Lambton Sting Minor Atom AAA's wrapped up their regular season with a 6-0 victory over the Kitchener Jr Rangers. The win leaves the Sting with a 14-15-1 record in league play and 27-26-3 overall.

Wanting to make a statement heading into the playoffs the Sting came out flying against Kitchener and scored the only goal of the first period. Spencer Vandenboom made a nice rush to get the opening marker with Cole MacKinnon drawing an assist.

In the second period the Sting would get 2 more goals with both coming off the stick of Monkhouse. Josh McLean would earn the assist on the first goal and Vandenboom made a nice pass to set up the second score. Kitchener had a few good chances to get on the scoresheet but McCarthy made a couple of big glove saves to allow Lambton to take a 3-0 lead into the final period.

The score would remain 3-0 for the first 12 minutes of the third period before Monkhouse would complete the natural hat trick with a power play goal assisted by MacKinnon. The Sting would put the game away with 2 more goals in the next minute. First it was Nolan DeGurse scoring with help from Vandenboom and Blake Brand and then Vandenboom rounded out the scoring with his second of the game from DeGurse and Jaycob White. McCarthy picked up his 5th shutout of the year in the win.

The Sting begin a best-of-five quarterfinal playoff series with the Sun County Panthers next weekend with games in Essex on Saturday and at the RBC Centre on Sunday.
