Vikings hand Irish first loss of season in final regular season game

The Northern Vikings were down one at half but managed to pull out a big victory over the St. Patrick Irish in midget boys basketball actions Tuesday afternoon at Northern, handing the Irish their first loss of the season.

The Vikings were lead in the first half by J. Jones, who put up big points for Northern during the first and second quarter. He started the action off with a rebound put back for two points, while also getting it off a pass for a lay in and off a steal for another two for six points. With an added free throw, Jones scored 7 of the Vikings 8 points in the 1st quarter.

P. Whitson helped the Irish with his four points in the half while J. McAuley had three points, and C. Sullivan two, helping to keep the Irish ahead of the Vikings.

But Jones would continue his lead into the second quarter, putting in another 7 points in the quarter to make it 14 by half time. But the Irish still lead by 1 going into the locker rooms, as at half time it was 18-17.

In the third the Vikings would come out quick to take the lead. M. Sidhu would collect 4 points in the third quarter, while McAuley had four of his own for the Irish, as Northern and St. Patrick's hand the lead back and forth for most of the quarter. But before the end of the third, M. Smiley would hit two free throws to take a one point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

S. German would help the Vikings in the paint push a early lead to four, but the Irish would get it back quick as McAuley would knock down the games only three pointer to close the gap. Jones would add four points in the middle of the quarter as the Vikings opened up a 5 point lead. T. Johnson Raines would drive the lane for the Irish and lay in a bucket, but Jones would finish it off with another rebound put back as the Vikings take it 39-31.

This marks the first loss of the season for St. Patrick's, but they still manage to hold onto first place with a 9-1 record. Northern sits with a 8-2 record in second place.

Neither team has a game till the playoff rounds next week.
