Toronto,
ON - The Ontario Hockey League announced the OHL
Academic Players of the Month for January.
West Division - The OHL Academic Player of
the Month for January in the West Division is
defenseman Brock Beukeboom of the Sault Ste Marie
Greyhounds. Beukeboom, 18, a native of Uxbridge,
Ontario is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts
Degree at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie.
Brock has shown maturity and resolve both on and
off the ice: He has independently balanced a
demanding hockey schedule with post-secondary level
academic responsibilities, and has achieved a high
level of success in both. Brock is an excellent
example of an OHL player who is able to balance
playing high level hockey while maintaining above
average grades in the classroom,commented Greyhound
Academic Advisor Jerry Bumbacco.
Midwest Division - The OHL Academic Player of
the Month for January in the Midwest Division is
centre Chris Tierney of the London Knights. Tierney,
16, a native of Keswick, Ontario is currently
attending Saunders Secondary School, in London.
Chris is currently maintaining an 80% average in
his academic classes. He is a conscience student who
is able to combine his academic studies while
playing in the OHL, commented Rob Waugh, Academic
Advisor for the Knights.
Central Division - The OHL Academic Player of
the Month for January in the Central Division is
right winger Samuel Schutt of the Sudbury Wolves.
Schutt, 16, a native of Palmer Rapids, Ontario is a
Grade 11 student at Lockerby Secondary School in
Sudbury. Wolves Academic Advisor Gord Ewin had this
to say about Sam, He maintains an 82% average and
is a pleasure to be around. He has made a nice
transition both in the class room and on the ice
during his first year in the OHL.
East Division - The OHL Academic Player of
the Month for January in the East Division is
defenseman Ryan Shipley of the Ottawa 67s Hockey
Club. Shipley, 16, a native of Ilderton, Ontario, is
currently in grade 11 attending Hillcrest High
School in Ottawa. Ryan is a hard worker with a good
attitude. He takes his school seriously and is
excellent with his time management, commented Mary
Kelso, Academic Advisor for the 67s.
OHL
Academic Highlights:
OHL players successfully completed 97% of high
school courses during the 2009-10 season.
Of the 57 overage players that competed in the
league during the 2009-10 season, 31 have signed
professional hockey contracts while 26 have accessed
their academic scholarships in 2010-11 at various
institutions across North America.
363 OHL graduates and current players are on
scholarship from OHL Member Teams at 66 different
institutions across North America.
