Petrolia shutsout Goderich and wins Pool B
andrew brethauer February 5th, 2011

The Petrolia Lady Oilers Midget B won their second game of the Silver Stick tournament to improve to 2-1-0 as they shutout Goderich 2-0 Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were evenly matched through the first period with the play being spent in the neutral zone as each time tried to get a better position. The Oilers would get the first good chance as Mackenzie Sleaford came down on a 2 on 1 and kept the puck but her cut across the crease could not result in a goal as Jessica Yates stood strong amongst the Oilers crashing her crease.

Yates would be tested again on another 2 on 1 but the shot went into her padding as the first period ends with a 0-0 score.

In the first half of the second period Goderich begins to get decent shots on the Petrolia goalie, making Amelia Maniuk make big saves to keep the Oilers from falling behind.

Maddie Melady was left alone for a one timer but Maniuk was there for the stop. Finally midway through the second, Petrolia would break the deadlock as Kristin Vokes tries to dump the puck in but it hits the refeeres skate and she gets it back. She passes over to Erica Vandersteen who takes the initial shot and picks up her own rebound and puts it by Yates for the 1-0 Oiler lead.

Goderich would try to respond as Shelsie Popp sent a shot into the pads of Maniuk and another shot would trickle just wide of the net to end the second period with the Oilers leading 1-0.

Goderich in the third period began to take shots from just inside the blue line, making it easy for Maniuk to see and catch. Maniuk would stop Goderich's breakaways and keep the shutout going deep into the third.

Both teams would get chances but neither could put away the much needed goal. In a last effort Goderich pulls their goalie. While in the Petrolia zone the puck is shot around the boards and comes to the defence.

But Unfortunately it hopes over her stick and Kendra Steadman wins out the foot race and puts it into the open net for the 2-0 Petrolia lead and eventual win.

In their two other games, Petrolia defeated Milverton 2-1 and tied North York 2-2 making them first place in Pool B.
