Blackhawk novice with one game remaining in regular season
sarniasports.com February 1st, 2011

Point Edward Novice Blackhawks have continued their winning ways with only one game left in the final stages of regular season play. With a division leading 17-1-1 record, they are firing on all pistons!

On January 22, they were matched up against Mount Brydges White in an early morning road game. Owen Shearon led the team out of their early morning slumber with 3 goals and an assist on the way to a 5-3 win against the home squad. He opened the scoring at 6:34 of the first, assisted by Ethan Pereira. The dynamic duo repeated with another goal by Shearon (assist Pereira) 34 seconds later. Mount Brydges scored early in the second to cut the lead to 1 until Cameron Lacroix scored at 5:53, assisted by Shearon.

In the third period, Mount Brydges scored early to cut the lead again but Shearon completed his hat trick with an assist from Cole Reinders to take a 4-2 lead with 7:44 left in the game. Mount Brydges scored seconds later to cut the lead to 4-3. The Point hung on with great goaltending and defensive efforts until Corson Young sealed the Cougars’ fate with the Blackhawks’ 5th goal at 5:16 (assisted by Ethan Boucher). The 5-3 win was the kind of barn burner that makes everyone get ready for playoff hockey.

The Point followed up a week later with a home game against Strathroy White. The team was able to keep play in the Strathroy end for the majority of the game, peppering the opposing goalie with shots from every angle. Passing skills and fore-checking were the name of the game, with the defense holding the line on almost every play.

They were finally able to find the back of the net against a strong netminder in the second period with a goal from Owen Shearon (assited by Ryder Neinhuis and Corson Young). In the third, Jimmy Simpson scored off a pass from Cameron Lacroix to end the game 2-0.
Luke Crombeen scored his 7th shutout of the season and maintained his GAA at 1.31.

The team’s last regular season game will be a home game against Strathroy Red before the playoff season starts. As it stands, Point Edward will be one of the teams moving forward in post-season play.
