Lambton Shores falls to Michigan in first game of Silver Stick
andrew brethauer February 4th, 2011

The Lambton Shores Predators Peewee B team didn't have a great start to their Silver Stick tournament, as the team from Forest was downed by the Michigan Icebreakers 5-1.

In the first period Michigan would score first as Lauren Larson put a shot passed the Predators goalie to give the Icebreakers a 1-0 lead. That lead would go to 2-0 before the period was out as Emma Warnecke beat the Predators defence to the puck, circled the net and put in a wrap-around goal to give the Icebreakers the two goal lead heading into the second period, as Lambton Shores was not able to create much offence in the first and let the puck stay in their zone for most of the period.

In the second period the Predators would catch a break on the powerplay as  the puck was thrown towards the net and was redirected for the goal. Vanessa Soetumans was credited with the goal and Hailey Bayne-Foster with the assist, as the Predators cut the lead to one. Michigan would put the pressure on the Predators at the end of the period but they were not able to get anything passed Morgan Mackenzie who stayed strong in net.

In the third period the Icebreakers would get on the powerplay and it would cost the Predators as Ashley Awdish found the puck in the slot and wristed in passed Mackenzie to make it 3-1. Michigan would make it 4-1 when Emma Warnecke came down on a 2 on 1 and passed to an open Sophia Colvin who would score glove side. The Icebreakers would add one more goal as Mackenzie couldn't have a shot and the rebound was put in by Awdish for her second of the game.

Despite the loss, Morgan Mackenzie played a stellar game, stopping 5 breakaway chances by the Icebreakers with big pad saves, as well as smothering the puck in close, keeping the Predators in the game during key moments.

The Predators next play on Saturday as they take on Heartlad at 11:40a.m. at Point Edward Arena and then take on Mt. Clemens at Sarnia Arena at 6:20.
