Lady Sting (Midget AA) win opener at Silver Stick tournament
andrew brethauer February 4th, 2011

The Sarnia Sting Jr. Ladies Midget AA team opened up their Silver Stick tournament with a 5-3 over Sault Ste Marie Friday morning at the Clearwater Arena.

The first period had a feeling out phase, as each team moved the puck well but couldn't create to many scoring chances. In the Sarnia net, Cassie Kerrigan made a big save with her pad to keep the game scoreless, as that provided the best scoring chance for either team that period.

In the second period the game opened up. Karly Dobbin would get a early chance but send her shot just wide of the net while on the powerplay. The puck would eventually be blocked by Sault Ste Marie who would race back the other way short handed and have a good chance on a pass in front, but Kerrigan was able to stop the deke attempt and keep the game at a draw. Finally Sarnia would get on the board as Dobbin comes in on a 1 on 2 and snaps a shot glove side on Amanda Alexander to give the Sting a 1-0 lead.

Emily Williams slides in a goal to put the Sting up 2-1 after picking up her own rebound

But the Sting would get into penalty trouble as they are called for elbowing, and on the powerplay, Sault Ste Marie would tie it, as Melody Paradis would send a shot from the point that is redirected by Mariah Krancevich and gets past Kerrigan to tie the game at 1-1. But Sarnia would come back quickly as Emily Williams comes in on a 1 on 1 and sends a shot on net. The initial shot is saved, but the rebound is picked up by Williams who slides it past a sliding goalie to put the Sting up 2-1. Seconds later on a similar play Darian Limb would send a shot on net and pick up her own rebound to put the Sting up 3-1.

Sault Ste Marie would make a goalie change after a timeout, bringing in Aleisha Labbe, who is tested early as Dobbin's looks for her second goal on a breakaway but is stopped in close. Sarnia would get a powerplay chance later in the period, but couldn't get the puck moving forward and coughed it up beside their own net. Mikayla Ferlaino would pass it to Mariah-Leigh Fell whose shot trickled passed Kerrigan to make it a 3-2 game at the end of the second.

In the third, the first half was a back and forth battle as Sault Ste Marie looks for the tying goal. But Sarnia would be the ones to put it in first, as Sydney Smith sends a shot from the point that is tipped by Shauna McPhail and beats the goalie five-hole to put the Lady Sting up 4-2. Minutes later Dobbin's finally score her second goal after receiving a drop pass from Jillian Rops and putting it low glove side to make it 5-2. The Sting would fall into penalty trouble late in the period and again it would cost them as Mackenzie Gibson spots Mariah-Leigh Fell alone in front for the easy put in for her second of the game. But it was to late for any comeback as the Lady Sting earn their first victory 5-3.

Sarnia's next game will be Friday night at 6:15 at Clearwater as they take on Stratford. Their final game goes Saturday at the RBC Centre against Brampton.
