Lancers shutout Cyclones in girls hockey finals
andrew brethauer February 24th 2011

The LCCVI Lancers have done what they have done best all season long and that was shutout teams and play solid defence, as the Lancers defeated the St. Christopher Cyclones 1-0 in the finals of the girls LSSAA hockey league.

"We have always been a defensive team," says Lancer coach Sara Krowetz. "We only had one goal so we had to be careful to protect her. We have always come out as a defensive team, and it apparently worked out well for us today as we were able to keep them scoreless."

That strategy seemed to work as the Lancers allowed only two goals in five regular season games and two playoff games. Goalie Amelia Maniuk posted five shutouts on the season, despite having no rest with no backup.

In the first period the Lancers brought the offence to the table as Jillian Dops had a chance alone in front but was turned away by Cassie Kerrigan of the Cyclones. Kerrigan would be continually tested throughout the period as Dops was able to get a pass to team captain Karly Dobbins, but Kerrigan got the pad down for the save.

The Cyclones would have their chances as Amy Rawlings tipped a shot just wide of the net, but the first period ended scoreless with each team getting their chances.

In the second period it only took the Lancers four minutes to finally put one passed Kerrgan. With a scramble in front of her crease, Karly Dobbin's was able to jam home a loose puck to put the Lancers on the board 1-0.

Kerrigan would not let the single phase her game as moments later the young goalie came up with two big saves off another scramble in front of her crease. The Cyclones would get their own chances at the side of the net, but Maniuk held the post strong and kept the score in her teams favour.

Dobbins would have another chance on a breakaway as she walks in alone, but her shot could not beat the pad of Kerrigan, as she holds the score 1-0 till the end of the period.

In the third period the Lancers tried to move ahead, but Danan Limb couldn't put one passed Kerrigan either. She would make another save on the two on one and another on a sliding cross crease tip that she was able to get her glove on.

With less then a minute to go, the Lancers settled back onto defence as the Cyclones puller their goalie. A puck would slide through the crease of Maniuk but that is as close to the goal as the Cyclones would get, as the defence of the Lancers was able to keep the puck out of the zone for most of the final minute, helping to secure the championship win.

Kerrigan played an excellent game, as Krowetz knew she would be tough. "We knew she was going to be tough. We had to get some shots on [her]. When we went up by the one goal we kind of went back to the defensive game.

"I thought we played good," says team captain and lone goal scorer Karly Dobbins. "The [cyclones] brought it to us and made us work hard to win it this year."

Both the Lancers and the Cyclones move on to SWOSSAA finals next week.
