Point Edward lead Cougars in playoffs
sarniasports.com February 23rd, 2011

In game one of the first round of playoffs, the Pt. Edward Blackhawks showed the Mt. Brydges Cougars that they are contenders. In two of their previous meetings against the Cougars, the Hawks were unable to pull out a win. However that was not the case Feb 14th. The Hawks started out strong as soon as the puck was dropped, and did not let up till the game was over. The Taylor/ Saint /Marr line was on fire!

Blake Taylor got things started with the opening goal halfway through the first period with an assist going to Chris Courtemanche. Just before the end of the period, Marcus Saint finds the back of the net with assists from Blake Taylor and Chris Courtemanche. The period ended with a 2-0 lead for the Hawks.

In the second period, the Hawks continued to harass the Cougars along the boards and in front of the net. Taking two penalties in the second period found the Hawks shorthanded, but strong efforts kept the Cougars from obtaining any goals. Nearing the end of the period, Daniel Marr put another notch on the board for the Hawks with a pass from Blake Taylor. The score was 3-0 moving into the third period.

Once again, the Hawks continued to annoy the cougars with some hard hitting from first year Peewee’s Bryce Potvin, Adam Jackson and Jett Terpstra, along with second year Jonathon Boccanfuso. Solid, crowd pleasing hits kept reminding the Cougars to keep looking over their shoulders. Mid-way through the period the Cougars were able to penetrate Brandon Fortey’s defense with their first and only goal of the game. Persistent efforts by Blake Taylor found yet another opening in the goalie’s defense with assisted help from Jonathon Boccanfuso and Daniel Marr. Late in the period Blake Taylor deked out the goalie during a Penalty Shot to end the game with 5-1 score!

Playoffs work on a points system. Two points for a win and one point for a tie. The first team to reach six points will win the first round of playoffs. The Hawks take the lead in the series with two points.

In the second game in the first round of playoffs, Mt. Brydges Cougars pulled together to keep the Pt. Edward Blackhawks in line. The Cougars came out a lot stronger than they did in the last game.

For a second time in as many games, the Hawks were able to score first! This time it was from solid defenseman, Doug Conroy. Doug hammered in the goal with a powerful shot from the blue line halfway through the first period. Bryce Potvin and Chris Courtemanche continued with some hard hitting to shake up the Cougars. The period ended with a 1-0 lead for the Hawks.

The second period brought on some penalties for the Hawks. The Hawks continued to stave off any goals during the penalties. The Cougars did find a way around the Hawk’s defense to get the puck past Brandon Fortey close to the end of the third period.  The score was tied 1-1 after two periods of play.

The hawks were not done yet! Blake Taylor got the crowd back in the game by getting the puck past the Cougars goalie and into the net just seconds into the third period. The Cougars retaliated late in the period to tie the game 2-2.

Brandon Fortey has presented some concrete goaltending in this series to keep the Hawks above the Cougars. The Hawks now lead the series three points and the Cougars one point.
