Lambton Cup Preview: Northern vs St. Clair
sarniasports.com February 22nd, 2011

After the Shamrock tournament the St. Clair Colts and Northern Vikings could not have been any more opposite.

Northern won the tournament after going undefeated, while the Colts finished the tournament in last place, not winning a single game. Fast forward to today and the two teams are ready to faceoff against each other in the finals of the LSSAA boys hockey for the Lambton Cup on Wednesday at the Sarnia Arena.

The Vikings had a challenging year, at one point tied with SCITS for the final playoff spot with only a single win. But after a late season surge they clinched a playoff spot and found themselves up against the number one St. Christpher Cyclones. In a stunning upset the Vikings won in overtime, shutting out the Cyclones 1-0. The Vikings have played in the last five Lambton Cup Finals.

The Colts started the season on the wrong side of the win column, but during the middle of the season found their stride and moved up the standings, edging out LCCVI for the second overall team. With a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Lancers in double overtime, the Colts return to the Lambton Cup final for the first time since 1997.

LSSAA boys’ high school hockey in Lambton County officially began play in the fall of 1986. The actual Cup traces its origin to Switzerland that same year. In late 1986, the silver Cup was presented to the St.Clair Boys’ hockey team at the conclusion of a series of exhibition games that they played in that country. Once brought back to Sarnia, Al Duffy (a manager of St.Clair hockey) then had the Cup mounted onto a wood base. Christened the LSSAA “Lambton Cup”, it was presented to the champions of boys’ high school hockey in 1986/87. In that first season of LSSAA boys’ hockey, the “Cup” was won by the St.Clair Colts. It has been presented every year since then to the champions of LSSAA Boys high school hockey. It is kept on display in the LSSAA showcase in the Clearwater arena.
