With two
overtime victories in game four and five, the
Wallaceburg Lakers will move on to the second round
of the Great Lakes Junior C playoffs with a 4-3
victory over the Blenheim Blades Sunday night.
Blenheim
looked as if they were going to take game five, as
the Blades played with their season on the line and
jumped out to an early 1-0 after the first period
when Zach Mailloux scored shorthanded.
Four
minutes into the second period the Blades took a 2-0
lead when Mailloux got his second of the night. But
the second half of the game turned the tides in
favour of the Lakers, as Wayd Pitfield scored
shorthanded to cut the lead to 2-1, and Rob Pollock
scored on the powerplay to tie the game at 2-2 after
the second. The Blades only had 9 shots on net in
the period compared to the Lakers 19.
In the
third period, Pollock would put pressure on the
Blades when he scored his second of the game to give
the Lakers their first lead. The Blades would not go
lightly and with 16 shots in the period, Thomas
Innes would tie the game with just over two minutes
remaining, sending the game into overtime.
Unfortunatley the Lakers wouldn't need long to put
the series away, as Brendon Merritt scored on the
powerplay fifty-five seconds into the overtime
period to give the Lakers the 4-3 victory, the 4-1
series win.
With the
win the Lakers will now move on to face Mooretown in
round two.
