Squires build big lead and hold on for 6-4 victory
sarniasports.com December 17th, 2010

The Petrolia Squires defeated the Tillsonburg Thunder 6-4 Friday night.

Petrolia opened the game scoring twice on the powerplay. Jason Polera and Scott McPhail each added powerplay goals to give the Squires a 2-0 lead heading into the second.

Petrolia would extend that lead to four when Breydan Belan and Carson Simpson each added goals to give the Squires a 4-0 lead. Tillsonburg would get on the board by adding a goal just after the Squire fourth goal making it a three goal game heading into the third.

The Thunder would get another quickly to start the period, as they scored 19 seconds into the period. But the Squires would reply just as fast, as Dan Veenema scored 12 seconds after to make it 5-2. The Thunder would add two more goals in the middle of the period to bring the game to within one, erasing a four goal lead the Squires had built, but they couldn’t pull for the tie, as JJ Martin scored with six seconds left to make it a 6-4 game.

Petrolia next takes on Thedford in Sarnia at the RBC Centre on Saturday, December 18th.
