The
Sarnia Legionnaires won a nasty hockey game at the
Brock Street Barn last night.
Coach Dan Rose's Western Ontario Hockey Conference
squad scored in overtime to edge the St. Marys
Lincolns 3-2.
But
the game was marred by an incident at the end.
As
the Legionnaires came onto the ice to celebrate
their victory, Lincs goalie Greg Dodds charged
Sarnia netminder Kyle Washer.
Dodds was assessed two game misconducts (one for his
cheap shot head check that took Washer by surprise)
and another for fighting.
Washer was given a fighting major although he never
threw a punch, contenting himself with body slamming
Dodds to the ice after ducking under a punch.
Lincoln Jamie Baker, meanwhile, received a match
penalty for attempting to injure one of the
Legionnaires after the game was over.
Just before regulation ended, two players were
ejected for fighting, including Sarnia's Tanner
Tomlinson. The St. Marys combatant received an
instigator penalty as well.
Good road effort
The
Lincs did very well, displaying good speed and
determination, they jumped into a 2-0 lead after the
first period.
In
the second frame, they had a number of chances to
put the Legionnaires away, only to be foiled by
Washer.
Ilya Arkalov got the home side back in the contest
at 11:21 of the middle stanza when he moved in front
and fired home his fifth of the year. Brent Sauve
and Tanner Tomlinson assisted.
In
the third period, Owen Rogers accepted a nice
passout from Jeff Schroeter and tucked the puck
under the crossbar to tie the contest. For Rogers,
it was his 12th of the season.
Overtime winner
Captain Tyler Cicchini got the winner at the 57
second mark of OT when he backhanded home a rebound
for his ninth of the year.
Rose said the Legionnaires would have done better,
except for the fact that they had a bad week of
practices.
It
was no one's fault, he said, noting the snow storm
prevented him from getting to Sarnia from his home
in Port Stanley. It also stopped four or five
players from making it into Sarnia. Others missed
practise due to exams.
We were out of sync (because of a week without a
good practise) he said.
Still, the win moved Sarnia into a fifth place tie
with St. Marys.
Cicchini said when Rose arrived (with the
Legionnaires sitting in eighth place) he told us he
wanted us in fifth place. Now the goal is fourth.
Sarnia can move a step closer to that goal Sunday
when the Legionnaires play in St. Thomas.
But
they'll have to do it without Washer, who faces a
one-game suspension for fighting in the last 10
minutes of a game.
