Legionnaires preview against Predators
dan mccaffery December 2nd, 2010

The Sarnia Legionnaires will try to move above the .500 mark for the first time since Oct. 21 when they host the Lambton Shores Predators tonight.

Coach Dan Rose's surging Legionnaires have won three games in a row and four of their last five. In the process, they've jumped from eighth to sixth place in the nine-team Western Ontario Hockey Conference.

The Predators are on a five-game losing streak and sit in last place.

Here's a preview of the contest:

WHO – Sarnia Legionnaires (12-12-2) vs. Lambton Shores Predators (4-20)

WHERE – Sarnia Arena, 7:10 p.m.

WHO'S HOT

Sarnia – Ilya Arkalov seems to have found his scoring touch after being forced to miss a huge number of games while he awaited permission from Hockey Canada to suit up. In his last three outings the Russian teen scored two regulation goals plus two shootout winners.

Lambton Shores – The Rupert twins have been good all year. Ryan has 14 goals to his credit, while Matt has 13. Among Legionnaires, only Jesse Drydak has a comparable number, having found the back of the net 13 times.

HISTORY – The Legionnaires have won both games between the clubs this season, taking a 7-3 decision in Forest before squeaking out a 4-2 triumph in Sarnia. Overall, the Legionnaires are 8-5-1 at home, while the Predators are 1-12 on the road.

UNPEDICTABLE – Although the Predators would appear to be badly mismatched, they are capable of surprising their opponents. In fact, they have beaten the defending Sutherland Cup champion LaSalle Vipers twice this season. And it should be pointed out that the Vipers have almost all their players back from that title-winning squad. In addition to their four wins, Lambton Shores has lost four games by just one goal, including a recent contest in which they gave the powerful St. Thomas Stars a bad scare right in the Elgin County city.

CHARITY EVENTS – There will be two charity events at the game, including the second annual Woolie Toss. After the Legionnaires score their first goal, fans are invited to toss hats, mitts, scarfs and toques on the ice. After the game, they will be donated to various charities. It's also the Sunshine Foundation Cookie Explosion, an event in which all proceeds go to the foundation.
