The Point Edward Atom Blackhawks hosted the undefeated league leading Lucan Fighting Irish and squeaked out a 4-2 win to hand them their first loss.
The first period started with a fast pace and end-to-end action. Lucan hit the board first when the Point got into trouble in their own end and couldn’t clear it, allowing Lucan to score off a rebound to make it 1-0. Lucan took advantage of the Point being flat footed when they scored off a breakaway from their own end to make it 2-0 and making the game seem like their first meeting with Lucan getting the 2-points. With time ending in the period, the Point was able to gain their composure and Gladwish put the Hawks on the board with seconds remaining to end the first 2-1.
The second had the puck see both ends of the ice with both teams defense playing a key role in keeping the score at 2-1. Midway through the period, Gladwish made a precision pass from the corner to an opened Nicolas Robson during a power play who tied it at 2-2. Both teams offense seemed to get renewed life as the scoring chances increased but neither team could take the lead.
The crowd was on the edge of their seats for the third period as both teams put a lot of pressure on the defense and net-minders. The Hawks took the lead with a scramble in front of the Irish net when Best slammed the puck between the pipes while on his knees. The Hawks managed to extend their lead when Best moved the puck up ice and using the defense as a screen, put the game out of reach for the Fighting Irish and handing them their first loss of the season.
Reinders and MacDonald shared the duties between the pipes for the win.
