Cyclones remain perfect with big victory over Vikings
andrew brethauer December 8th, 2010

The St. Christopher Cyclones were undefeated coming into Wednesday's LSSAA hockey game against Northern, and left still undefeated after a 6-2 victory, This game marked a big test for the Cyclones, as the LSSAA Boys Hockey league had been dominated over the past several season by Northern and LCCVI. With today's win, St. Christopher's has put themselves in the front seat for the Lambton Cup.

It didn't take the Cyclones long to get started against the Vikings. 1:20 into the game, Corey Pawley gets St. Christopher's first shot on net, which is rebound right onto the stick of Brandon Moore who puts it passed Brandon Johnson to put the Cyclones up one nothing. Pawley would make it two nothing, as the speedy winger took the puck alone from his own end, put the puck between the defenders skates, before finishing it off. The Cyclones would add one more as Adam Wammes creeps up from the point into the slot and sends a shot passes Johnson to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead after one.

Northern had its chances, but couldn't get the puck on net, and when they did, goalie Pat Brennon had a clear view.

The Vikings would cut into the lead four minutes into the second, as the Vikings Braden Basso would score at the end of a powerplay, as he poked in a free puck to make it 3-1. But the Cyclones would restore the three goal lead as Moore would score his second of the game batting the puck out of the air as he stood alone beside the net. The teams would tighten up play in the second, as the Vikings had more quality scoring chances then they did in the first, but were still having issue combating the speed of St. Christopher's.

In the third, Brennon made two big saves early on to keep the four goal advantage. But the Vikings would crack the netminder who previously had two shutouts in his first two starts, as they scored a powerplay goal when Dan Charlton dragged the puck passed the Cyclones defence and beat Brennon to make it 4-2. Johnson would come back with three big saves for the vikings, keeping Northern only two goals down.

But the Cyclones would keep pounding the net with shots. Pietro Restivo would score his first of the game, picking up a lose puck and bringing it on on a breakaway to beat Johnson. Minutes later he would get his second, as Johnson would make the initial first stops, before Restivo jammed the third shot in for his second. The Cyclones would skate to a 6-2 victory.

With the victory the Cyclones improve to 5-0-0 on the season. They will close out the first half of the season playing two games next week. They will take on LCCVI on Wednesday, December 15th. LCCVI will be St. Christopher's second test of the season, as the Lancers are in second place behind the Cyclones. St. Chris will also take on St. Patrick's on Thursday December 16th.

Northern falls to 2-1-1 on the season. They as well will have two games next week before the break. On Wednesday they will take on SCITS, while on Thursday they will take on St. Clair.
