The
St. Clair
Colts senior
girls
volleyball
team swept
the Northern
Vikings
three sets
to zero
Thursday
afternoon at
St. Clair.
The game was
much closer
then the
score
depicted, as
the Colts
were able to
rally back
in the third
set from
eleven
points down
to take the
sweep.
The first
set saw the
Vikings give
up the lead
on critical
errors. The
Vikings had
control
issues in
keeping the
ball in the
court, and
sent the
ball long
and wide to
give the
Colts a
quick 8-2
lead. Deanna
Ritchie
would serve
up two aces
for the
Vikings to
start to
close the
gap, while
Lauren Dann
would add a
block at the
net and an
ace of her
own to pull
the Vikings
back to
within two.
But the
Colts would
hold strong,
getting an
ace from
Riley
Williams and
a block and
ace from
Dann.
Nearing the
end of the
set, it is
the Colts
who start to
make
mistakes and
begin to let
the Vikings
back in with
kills at the
net. Ritchie
would get
another ace
for the
Vikings to
tie the game
up, her
fourth ace
of the set.
Both teams
would
exchange
points on
service
errors,
before the
Vikings
would have
two costly
errors to
give the
Colts the
first set
28-26.
In the
second set,
the Colts ad
Vikings kept
things
close,
holding a
tie for most
of the set.
The teams
would trade
the lead
back and
forth,
giving the
lead back on
errors, and
then having
it returned
on other
team errors.
Jordan
Tamming
would get an
ace for the
Colts and
open up a
two point
lead,
followed by
Veronica
Carpani with
an ace of
her own, and
Lexi Hanly
with one as
well. The
Colts opened
up a five
point lead,
leading
19-14. From
there the
Colts would
relenquish a
single
point, going
on to finish
the set with
six straight
points to
win 25-14.
In the third
set, the
Vikings
would take
control
early.
Delaney
Large would
push the
Vikings to
an early
10-2 lead
after she
serves for
ten straight
points, with
three aces.
The Colts
and Vikings
trade aces,
but the
Vikings
continue to
open the
largest lead
of the game,
16-5. When
the Colts
got the ball
back Riley
Williams
served in
what was a
dominating
performance.
Williams
would bring
the Colts
back from
down eleven
to winning
by three, as
she hit
seven aces
in that
span, and
the Colts
also got
help from
Viking
errors. The
Vikings
would
committ two
more errors
at the end
of the
match, and
their once
eleven point
lead, is a
25-20 loss.
Northern
next takes
on St.
Francois-Xaiver,
while the
Colts travel
to take on
LCCVI.
Northern is
now 1-1 in
league play,
while the
Colts are
2-0.
