Junior C Playoff Preview
andrew brethauer february 8th, 2011

It's been an exciting race to the playoffs in Great Lakes Junior C action, as Mooretown and Alvinston battled for home advantage, while Blenheim edged out Dresden for the final spot against the number one Wallaceburg Lakers. And now with the regular season over the playoffs are set and the second half of the year begins.

(4) Blenheim Blades

vs

(1) Wallaceburg Lakers
14-25-0   40-8-2

Wallaceburg was the first team to clinch a playoff spot well before the playoffs were even in the thoughts of most teams. With the best record in all of the GLJHL, the Lakers have got to be a favourite heading into the post-season. The Lakers are a tough home team to beat (16-4-0), going well into December before their hometown crowd had to go home unhappy. And their 168 goals are tops amongst the North Division. But so are their 1091 penalty minutes. The Lakers will be looking towards Tyson Isaac to lead the way in scoring as he has done all year, scoring 38 goals, 35 assists and 60 points, good for fourth in the league. They'll also look towards Matt Berglund who started 32 games throughout the season and sports an impressive 25-6-1 record, good for first in the league in wins, as well as a 2.58 GAA (2nd) and .914 SV% (2nd).

Blenheim will be in tough against the high powered offence of Wallaceburg, as the Blades have given up 187 goals this season, the most in the GLJHL. But the Blades are capable of scoring as well, as Thomas Innes sits 9th in the league with 51 points. Their two goals sport the highest GAA in the league, so they will need a defensive effort to stop the Lakers. Dylan Vanderpol and Brandon Cowell split the games throughout the regular season, so don't surprised to see each goalie get a chances against the Lakers during the best of seven series.

Wallaceburg won the season series 5-1.

(3) Alvinston Flyers

vs

(2) Mooretown Flags
16-21-3   19-19-2

Mooretown and Alvinston battled most of the season for second place and home ice advantage, and by seasons end the Flags .500 record was good enough to take the second place honours. The Flags are lead by the Teschke brothers who combines for 135 points throughout the season. Jason lead the league in points with 35 goals and 37 assists, while Josh had 24 goals and 39 assists. Also amongst the top ten is points is Mike Burns with 23 goals and 28 assists, giving the Flags 3 players in the top 10 of scoring. In goal the Flags have Jordan Gladwish who went 14-12-1 throughout the season, but allowed 117 goals, second most of all goalies.

For Alvinston Brandon Campbell will again go between the pipes, as the young goalie has 36 starts, the most of any goalie in the GLJHL, and sports a 15-16-2 record. His 3.78 GAA is 7th among goalies, good for a goalie who has faced 1258 shots this season, 369 more then what Gladwish faced. Alvinston also has their own scoring touch as Chris Edwards trailed Jason Teschke by only 3 points with 69 points on the season, scoring 29 goals and 30 assists. Dan Warner also made the top 10 with 51 points himself.

Mooretown won the season series 4-2, but expect a close series and don't be surprised if it goes to seven games.
