The Indians had one game to make up and did so on
Tuesday evening, in Inwood, against the visiting
Morpeth Magic. Alvinston got to work early and
often, scoring 2 runs in the first, and 3 more in
the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Then after
a pitching change, the Indians were able to add one
more insurance run. Brad Young was the winning
pitcher on the mound for Alvinston, pitching 7
innings of shutout ball, fanning 11 Morpeth
swingers, while allowing only 1 walk and 2 hits.
Lorne Noah suffered the loss for Morpeth.
Joe Triest tripled to start the game and then scored
on a wild pitch for the game's first run. Then a one
out Chris Drew homerun capped off the first inning
for Alvinston, with an early 2-0 lead. In the
second, Aaron Stocking doubled and Brad Young
singled to put runners on first and third. Jeff
Lyons then came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly
to center field to score Stocking, with a key RBI
recorded by Lyons. Andy Triest then came to the dish
and singled to score Young, for the 4-0 lead. Joe
Triest then followed with a walk, putting runners on
first and second, and with 2 out, Drew hit an RBI
single to plate A. Triest, for the game's fifth run.
Fast forward to the sixth inning, Alvinston added
their last run, when Lyons tripled and then scored
on a bullet RBI single by Jamie Shields with two
out.
Alvinston finished the regular season with a 19-5
record, but it wasn't good enough for first place,
as St. Thomas recorded a record of 20-4. A tight
race in the standings kept the League Championship
up in the air until the final game! Alvinston will
now face the seventh seed in the league, in a best
of 3 series, and the hope is that it will be
finished before Alvinston travels to the ISC World
Championships on August 13.
