The Alvinston Indians traveled to Fingal on Monday
evening, for game 2 of their St. Thomas & District
Major Fastball League semi-final playoff series,
against the Shedden Mission. A great crowd was on
hand for the game, and enjoyed some strong pitching,
and some long hits.
The game was scoreless through the first 3 innings,
as Shedden wasn't able to solve Brad Young early,
nor were the Indians able to solve Mission pitcher
Nic Goetz. Goetz fanned 8 of the first 12 Alvinston
batters, and appeared in control. But in the fourth,
Alvinston opened the scoring in a big way. Ryan
Chapman singled for Alvinston, stole second base,
and then with one out, Jeff Ingram clobbered a 2-2
pitch over the centre field fence for a 2 run shot,
and a 2-0 lead for the visitors. Young went back to
work for Alvinston keeping Shedden off the
scoreboard for 2 more innings. In the sixth,
Alvinston continued to score runs via the long ball,
when Chapman and Young each hit solo home runs, to
extend the lead to 4-0. After two straight outs for
Alvinston, Chris Sheppard went in to pinch hit, and
singled up the middle. He then promptly stole
second, and the ball kicked away from the Shedden
second baseman, and Sheppard scored all the way from
second for a 5-0 lead.
But, Shedden, of course, would not go quietly. Cooke
singled to lead of the sixth, and then a 1 out
double by Cornelius got Shedden on the board, now
down 5-1. The very next hitter was McPherson, and he
touched up Young for a single, and an error in the
outfield for Alvinston allowed the hitter to advance
to second, and the runner to score from second for a
5-2 game. Lynch was the next hitter and he followed
suit, hitting a ball up the middle, but Indians
centre fielder Andy Triest gunned out McPherson at
the plate to keep the score at 5-2 in favour of the
Indians. The next hitter was then retired, and the
inning was over.
In the seventh, Alvinston had an answer to the
momentum Shedden had just created in their favour,
when two straight errors by Shedden got Joe Triest
and Jamie Shields on first and second base. Chris
Drew then reached base via a fielder's choice, as
Joe Triest was forced out at third. Still with
runners on first and second and now two out in the
inning, Brad Young did it again. Young hammered a
ball just over the centrefield fence, for his second
homer of the game, which was a three run shot, that
ultimately iced the game for Alvinston, and extended
the series, scoring both Shields, Drew, and of
course Young.
Brad Young was the winning pitcher, tossing all
seven innings for Alvinston, and scattering 8 hits
while striking out 8 as well. He had no walks, and
allowed 2 runs, in which only 1 was earned. The
Indians offence did a great job by using their power
game, pounding out 4 home runs, with Young
accounting for 2 of the 4 dingers.
Game 3 goes Thursday night in Alvinston at 8:00pm,
with the winner advancing to the league finals.
