Alvinston, ON -
The Alvinston Indians opened their St. Thomas &
District Major Fastball League semi-final against
Shedden on Thursday evening, in Alvinston, in front
of a good crowd. The Indians sent young hurler Kyle
Crawford to the hill, a pitcher who had had
Shedden's number this season, but a leadoff walk to
Haggerty, and a 2 out 2 run homerun by Mission
pitcher Jason Dawdy, got Shedden in front early by a
score of 2-0. Crawford then escaped the second
inning leaving the bases loaded, and settled down in
the third and fourth innings for Alvinston, by doing
his job and keeping the game within reach for
Alvinston.
In the fifth, Crawford walked the leadoff batter,
and that was it as the Indians went to their pen and
veteran Brad Young was brought in in relief. A
series of 3 errors by Alvinston cost them two runs,
and they were now down 4-0 in the contest. The
Indians finally threatened in their half of the
fifth when they were able to muster a run, when Jeff
Lyons who reached base via a fielder's choice, came
around to score on an RBI single by Jamie Shields.
Alvinston had the bases loaded with two out, but
were unable to add to their run total, as they were
down 4-1 after five innings.
But in the sixth inning, Alvinston made it a game
when Ryan Chapman reached base via an infield
single, and eventually scored on an RBI single by
youngster Jeff Lyons. Lyons then advanced to second
and third via wild pitches, and then scored with
Chris Sheppard up to bat, when Sheppard swung for
strike 3, but the pitch was low and Sheppard was
safe at first, and Alvinston was now back in the
game with a 4-3 score. Andy Triest then reached base
via an infield single to put runners on first and
second for Alvinston, but they were unable to score
the tying run. Young promptly retired Shedden in the
seventh, allowing one single, and the Indians were
going into their final at bat with a chance to tie
the game. With one out both Chapman and Chris Drew
singled to put runners on first and second. But a
groundout to shortstop for Alvinston, allowed a
double play to occur, which ended the game.
Shedden escaped game 1, with a well deserved 4-3
win, and an all-important 1-0 series lead. Game 2
goes Monday night in Fingal beginning at 8:00pm.
