The Sarnia Senior Braves captured the 2011 WCBL pennant with a 9-5 victory over the Maple City Brewers at Fergie Jenkins Field in Chatham.

After losing the first leg of their road doubleheader, the Braves sent righthander Jeff Jones to the hill in hopes of winning the season series against the Brewers and pushing the Braves out of reach in league play.

Jones didn’t disappoint as he struck out 11 batters for the complete game victory.

Sarnia hit the board first in the second inning as Chris Bright launched a solo homerun to right field for the 1-0 lead.

The Braves would add three more runs in the third inning. Nick Baljeu would start things off with a walk and move to second on a Wade Babula sac-bunt. James Grant would rip a line drive single to center which saw Baljeu called out on a questionable play at the plate. But Sarnia wouldn’t fold with two out and after a Mason McCarthy single, Rory Fell would crush a deep homerun to centerfield for the 4-0 Sarnia lead.

Sarnia would add three more runs in the fourth with Babula, Jamie Barron, and Greg Kemble scoring. Doug Amlin would score in the fifth to make the score 8-0 for the visiting Braves.

Maple City wouldn’t give up though and managed to put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Sarnia would respond with one run in the frame as Fell would cash Grant on an RBI single to put the score at 9-4. Maple City would pick up a run in the seventh but Jones would settle down and shut the door to give Sarnia the win.

The Braves sit at 21-3 in league action and 33-8 overall.

“This has been a great year for our club and winning the WCBL pennant with three games remaining on the schedule proves that we are moving in the right direction as an organization,” says coach Brad Wright. “We took our lumps in our inaugural season last year in order to get to this point and it is just such a good feeling to know that our hard work paid off.”

Sarnia is now preparing for the Michigan Cup which will take place on September 22-25 in St. Clair Shores, MI. They will be playing home games throught the next four weeks at Errol Russell Park, with their next action coming on Wednesday, August 24th against the Port Lambton Pirates. Game time is 7:30pm
