The
Alvinston Indians hosted the Glencoe Astros in game
2 of their St. Thomas & District Major Fastball
league best 2 out of 3 quarter final series. With
the Indians up 1-0 in the series, another win would
punch their ticket to the semifinals.
The Indians scored early and often. After a Joe
Triest single to lead the Indians off, Ryan Chapman
smacked an RBI triple with two out to plate J.
Triest, and then Chapman scored on a wild pitch,
with Brad Young at the dish, for an early 2-0 lead,
after one inning. In the second inning, Alvinston
added one more run, when Andy Triest reached base
via a fielder's choice, stole second base, and then
scored on an RBI single by Joe Triest. In the third,
Alvinston added two more runs, when Chris Drew
singled to lead off the inning, and then Chapman
smacked a two run home run to right-centre field,
for a 5-0 lead.
However, things got interesting in the top of the
sixth, when the Glencoe Astros finally made some
noise in the game. After back to back singles by the
Astros, the Indians made two errors in the inning,
while there was also another hit, and by the end of
the inning, the game was now tight, as Glencoe
scored 4 runs, to make the game close at 5-4! But
the Indians went back to work in the home half of
the sixth inning, exploding for 6 runs of their own
on 5 hits, now making the game 11-4, with the mercy
rule coming into effect after 6 innings.
Scoring for Alvinston were Chapman (3), A. Triest
(2), J. Triest, Drew, Young, Aaron Stocking, Jeff
Ingram, and Jamie Shields. Driving in the runs and
collecting RBI's were Chapman (3), Young (2),
Stocking (2), Eric Hyatt (2), J. Triest, and Drew.
Brad Young was the winning pitcher, tossing 6
innings of ball for Alvinston, allowing 4 runs, 2
earned runs, 5 hits, and he had 2 striekouts in the
contest, en route to the series clinching win.
The Alvinston Indians are now off to the ISC World
Championships this weekend, from August 13 to August
20. Their first game is Sunday at noon versus the
Cal-State Builders. They will also play at 4:00pm
Sunday, if they win their first game. Alvinston will
now face Shedden in the semifinals of the St. Thomas
& District Major Fastball League after they return.
