Courtright, ON - The Courtright Cardinals took their
first game against Corunna in the home & home series
in the Western Counties Baseball Play downs 3-1
Monday night in Courtright.
The
Cardinals were the visitors in this game despite it
being played at their home field. Corunna wouldn't
take long to get on the board, as a double off the
wall would later be scored on a single to centre to
give the home team a 1-0 lead.
But in
the top of the second, Courtright would come out
swinging. Grant Mullen would double off the wall
himself to get things started, just barley missing
the home run. Jordan Skinner would lay down the bunt
trying to advance the runner, but Mullen would score
on a pass ball thrown to first, and Skinner would
move to second. Ryan Barnes would score Skinner on a
single, but the Cardinals would be caught with the
bases load, as Corunna got out of the inning.
Both
pitchers would settle in after the second, as the
game went by at a quick pace with many three
up-three down innings. It wouldn't be till the top
of the 6th when the game would see addition runs.
Mark
Colbran would get on with a single and would
eventually make it to third base. With Skinner again
at the plate, Courtright put on the suicide squeeze,
as Colbran took off for home, while Skinner laid
down the bunt. Colbran crossed the plate before the
pitcher got to the ball, giving Courtright a 3-1
lead.

In the
bottom of the inning, starting pitcher Jeff Drexler
would find himself in a jam with the bases loaded
and 1 out. But the young pitcher settled in and get
out of the inning without giving up a run, striking
out two.
Neither
team could score in the 7th, as Drexler went the
distant, earning the complete game victory.
Courtright is now 1-0 against Corunna and Petrolia,
and will take on both teams on August 12th. Corunna
is 1-1 in the play downs with a 4-1 extra innings
victory over Petrolia, while Petrolia is now 0-2
after their loss to Courtright. The two teams with
the most victories will meet in a best of three to
see who moves on to the Provincial Championships.
