Sarnia, ON – Sarnia
Sting Head Coach and General Manager Jacques
Beaulieu announced today that the hockey club has
completed a trade with the Belleville Bulls.
The Sting have acquired 18-year old defenceman Alex
Basso and a 3rd round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority
Selection in return for forward Garrett Hooey.
Beaulieu explains the trade from the Sting
perspective.
“We were dealing from a position of strength with
our depth up front and particularly down the middle
at the centre position. With some of the recent
moves and player signings we still wanted to
strengthen our defence. With the acquisition of Alex
and in signing Connor Murphy last week I believe we
have significantly improved our back end and in turn
the balance of our hockey club. We felt this was a
good deal not only for our hockey club but for the
development of Garrett as well to be put in a
position to play more minutes.”
Basso a 4th round pick of the Bulls in 2009 is
expected to help the Sting at both ends of the ice.
Beaulieu on the package the Sting acquired.
“Alex is a solid defenceman with some offenseive
upside. He has been a point producer in his first
two seasons and he is entering that age when many
players in our league take that next step. Also in
acquiring a 3rd round pick in 2015 we’re happy with
our current depth and draft picks we have. This is a
pick that will be an asset for our club down the
road as we look to have sustained success.”
With
the trade for Basso and the signing of Connor
Murphy, Beaulieu made another trade from a numbers
standpoint, moving local player Kyle Flemington to
the London Knights for a 6th round pick in the 2012
OHL Priority Selection.
With
the recent acquisitions Beaulieu explained why the
trade took place.
“After we signed Connor Murphy and then made the
move to acquire Alex Basso today from Belleville
this move was necessary from a numbers standpoint.
We like the position we’re in both from the roster
we have assembled as well as the draft picks we
continue to accumulate. All that being said this was
still a difficult move to make in trading a local
player such as Kyle who is a first-class person and
was a great ambassador for our club in the city and
throughout the county. We wish Kyle all the best in
London and throughout his career.”
