Cyclones hold Irish in shutout victory
andrew brethauer April 26th, 2011

The St. Christopher Cyclones held back all the attacks by the St. Patrick's Fighting Irish in their 15-0 shutout victory Tuesday afternoon in senior boys rugby action.

St. Patrick's controlled the early portion of the game, but the Irish seemingly ran into a wall, as despite all their efforts through pitches and brute force, they couldn't cross mid-field and get into the Cyclones half.

The Cyclones would threaten early on, and would eventually capitalize of the Irish turnovers and good field position, as Riley Hebert would muscle the ball into the end zone and pick up the games first try, as turnovers caught up with the Irish. The conversion was missed, but the Cyclones lead 5-0.

After a St. Chris turnover, the Irish would get good field position close to mid-field, but once again, the Cyclones held the line and forced the Irish back. The teams would trade turnovers in the Irish half as St. Chris took the ball close to the Irish goal line. But a turnover ended their chances, and the half ended before the Irish could make an significant movement up the field.

In the second half, the Irish would get passed the half mark, as a turnover inside the Cyclones half gave them excellent field position. But their brute force couldn't make a dent in the Cyclone armour, as the Cyclones get the ball back into their position, wrapping up the Irish and forcing the turnover. But just as quickly, St. Patrick's would take over again deep in the Cyclones half and threaten to tie the game. The Cyclones would get a chance on a clear kick to move the ball down field, but an offside call would bring it back. But St. Patrick's couldn't capitalize with the excellent position, and the Cyclones would get the ball kicked away.

With the ball back in the Irish zone, a costly scrum would put the ball back into the hands of St. Christopher's. Chris Congas would pick up the ball of the scrum and rush it in for another try, putting the Cyclones up 10-0.

The Cyclones would again threaten and move the ball well, pitching the ball across the field and opening up the Irish defence enough for Congas to get through again for his second try of the game, giving the Cyclones a 15-0 lead.

St. Patrick's would run out of time and would not make it by the Cyclone defence, as St. Christopher's picks up the victory.

With the victory St. Christopher's improves to 1-1 on the season, while St. Patrick's falls to 0-2. The Cyclones will next take on Northern on Wednesday, April 27, while the Irish will take on LCCVI on May 2nd.
