Cyclones blank Colts in Sr. Girls Soccer
andrew brethauer April 21st, 2011

The St. Christopher Cyclones kept the ball in the St. Clair half most of the game which helped build a 3 goal lead in a 3-0 shutout in senior girls soccer action from Thursday.

The Cyclone pressure started quickly, as Jenna Prevost had an open scoring chance off a cross box pass, but her shot is stopped by a diving Heather Robertson to keep the game scoreless. But the Cyclones would continue to come into the goal box and get shots on the net. Jenelle Labadie had a chance, dekeing through the Colt defence with excellent foot work, but the Colt defence was there to support their keeper, keeping Labadie from getting a shot off.

Back the other direction, St Clair looked to get the go ahead goal as Megan Moore raced down a ball trailing closely by a Cyclone defender. She wouldn't get all of the shot and St. Christopher goalie Celine Norman was able to scoop up the ball and keep the game a tie.

Still looking for their first goal, St. Christopher was back on the attack, as Labadie fed Alexandra Potts with a through pass, but her shot is just wide of the net.

But minutes later, the Cyclones would finally crack the goal post. The Cyclones would send the ball into the box, and with a deflection of the back of a Colt defender, Chelsee Pettit would pick up the loose ball and shoot it passed a diving Robertson to make it a 1-0 game.

Moments later the Cyclones almost added another as Robertson misplays a kick on net, bobbling the ball right to Valerie Spano who can't get the shot through the Colt defence that stands in her path to the net.

Despite the ball spending the majority of the half in the Colt end, St. Clair gets away only down 1.

But coming out in the second, it wouldn't take the Cyclones long to improve on their lead. Gina Gillis would get in close on Robertson and send a quick shot on net, beating the diving goalie to put the Cyclones up 2-0.

St. Clair would try to respond, threatening to score with the ball in the Cyclones box, but their couldn't get a quality shooting chance as they passed the ball around looking for a hole. Finally a shot, but it would sail wide as the Cyclone defence holds their ground.

This would turn out to prove costly for the Colts, as St. Christopher's would increase their lead when Samantha Pakvis would receive a pass and move in close on Robertson, and shooting the ball passed the keeper to make it 3-0 for the Cyclones.

Labadie would get another chance to increase the lead for the Cyclones, but her shot would go wide, and Michelle Savo would be stopped by Robertson, but fortunately for the Cyclones, they kept the ball in the Colts half to finish off the game and save the shutout for Norman.

With the victory the Cyclones improve to 1-1 after their first game loss to Northern. They will next take on LCCVI (1-1) on May 3rd. St. Clair falls to 0-2 after a loss to LCCVI, and will be in tough against the 2-0 Northern Vikings on April 26th.
