Colts earn second shutout of season
andrew brethauer April 20th, 2011

The St. Clair Colts improve to 2-0 on the season after a 7-0 victory over the Northern Vikings in senior boys rugby action from Wednesday afternoon.

In their two games this season, St. Clair has yet to allow any points to be scored on them, as the shutout of the Vikings coupled with the 41-0 victory over St. Patrick's on Thursday, April 14th, the Colts have managed to put up 48 points in just two games, while not allowing their opponents to get close to their end zone for any type of score.

To start the game their was little movement of the ball forward by any team, as the Vikings and Colts tangled in scrums for most of the start of the game. Northern would get a long run deep into the Colt half, but after throw ins and scrums, St. Clair ended up with the ball, using their power to push forward and secure possession.

With the Vikings deep in their zone, Denver Spearman would send the ball deep with a long kick. A scrum would change the possession back to the Colts, where Dan Swain would get the ball off a pitch and run it in for a try to give the Colts the first lead of the game. Spearman would add the extra to make it 7-0.

Northern would try again to push deep into the Colt half, threatening again to score. But after another scrum win, the Colts would once again send the ball back down field with a long kick. After a Viking turnover the Colts looked to score again and increase their lead. But the Vikings held strong and denied the Colts another try, forcing them to turn the ball over and end the first half.

In the second half, it was more of the same action from the first. Northern looked to score again, but after a turnover on a scrum, St. Clair would send it back into the Viking half with another long kick. But this time, Northern would retrieve the kick and bring it back quickly into the Colts half. But much like before, St. Clair would gain possession again and send the ball back through the air into the Vikings half.

The action continued back and forth as the second half was battled in the scrums. Again St. Clair power would be displayed as the Colts pushed through the Vikings, allowing for a long run to bring the ball close to the goal line. But the Vikings battled back and took possession of the ball.

With the game coming to a close, the Vikings were on the doorstep looking to tie the game. With pitch after pitch, the Vikings looked to break through the defence of the Colts, coming as close as a few yards from scoring. But St. Clair held their ground and when they got possession, much like they had done all game, they returned the ball through the air into the Viking half. With no time left to make any moves, St. Clair went on to a 7-0 victory.

Northern will next take on St. Christopher's on Wednesday, April 27th, while St. Clair will take on LCCVI.
