Chris Kerwin stopped two shots during the penalty kick extra time to give the St. Christopher Cyclones the victory in their opening season match against the Northern Vikings.

The game was played in a wet field, as a light rain lasted throughout much of the game, making the ball and grass slippery and affecting some aspects of play. The Cyclones would get an early chance but their shot would sail high over the net.

Oren Bell would get a chance on the Northern Keeper, but he too would send his shot over the crossbar and the game would remain scoreless.

Northern would respond with their own chances, as Brian Kaija sends a free kick into the box of the Cyclones, but none of the Vikings forwards could find the ball to tap it into the net for the go ahead goal. Benji Schaefer would have another excellent chance for the Vikings coming in wide, but his shot would ring off the outside of the post and out of play.

But the Vikings would continue the press and would get a great scoring chance. Elliot Pecora would send a hard shot on net which Kerwin was able to get a piece of. But with the slippery conditions, the ball got through his hands and rolled towards the goal line. But Kerwin was able to get back and dive on the ball before the Vikings could take the lead.

Continuing with their chances, Ryan Dayman would send a shot on net but it would hit the crossbar, and the rebound cannot be put away by the Viking forwards.

The Cyclones would turn it around and finally get their own chances as Mark Spinozzi`s shot from the top of the box would sail just wide of the Northern net. But the Cyclones would continue the pressure, as Rodney Reese would get space in close after the ball bounced through the Viking defence, but his shot would also sail high over the crossbar on a great opportunity to put the Cyclones on the scoreboard.

Just before the half, St. Christopher's put pressure on again, getting the ball into the box, but were unable to get a shot on net as the Viking defence held their ground and applied pressure. The Cyclones would get two shots, but both would sail wide as the game remained scoreless after the first half.

In the second half, Northern would get back on the attack, as they would send crosses into the box, looking for the header, but no one was able to connect. Danny Stewart would connect with a header, but it would go wide of the net.

Northern`s best chance of the half came on a solid shot on net that rebound out in front of Kerwin. But the Vikings again send the bouncing ball over the net despite being within a few feet of the net.

St. Christopher's would look to finally break the scoreless game, as Danielo Bucci sends a hard shot on net. The shot beats the Northern keeper, but it can't beat the post, and the rebound is cleared away from the net.

The game would need shootouts to decide a winner.

In the first round of shooting, Brian Kaija would make it 1-0 Northern, but Ryan Greenwood would respond to tie the shootout. In the second round, Kerwin would come up with a big diving save on Danny Stewart to give the Cyclones the advantage. Alex Decarolis would respond and beat the Northern goalie to make it 2-1.

Nathan Wilson would try and tie it up for the Vikings, but again Kerwin would be there to make the save. Dillon Grondin would score for the Cyclones to give them a 3-1 lead. Elliot Pecora would be able to cut the lead to one with his goal for Northern, but Thomas Moxley would seal the victory with a goal to give the Cyclones the first win of the season.
