Legionnaires hand out team awards

Jesse Drydak has been named Most Valuable Player of the Sarnia Legionnaires for the second year in a row.

The rightwinger won the trophy Thurdsay at the Jr. 'B' hockey club's annual awards ceremony.

Drydak scored 32 goals and picked up 37 assists this past winter. He was also recognized as the team's top scorer.

Other winners, who were applauded by a crowd of 170 people at Sarnia Branch 62 of the Royal Canadian Legion included:

Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs – Captain Tyler Cicchini, who scored one goal and added three assists in the four games the Legionnaires played against the London Nationals.

Cicchini has a history of performing well in the post season. In 2009, for example, he scored 18 goals in leading the club to the Western Jr. 'B' title.

Rookie of the Year – Nathan Mater took home this award. The 16-year-old had 15 goals and 17 assists in 50 games.

Best Defenceman – Steve Farlow won as top blueliner. He scored two goals and had six assists, despite the fact that he missed nine games due to illness.

Most Dedicated Player – Owen Rogers won this honour for a campaign in which he scored 15 goals and 28 assists. He was also one of the top forecheckers in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Most Improved Player – Rookie Thomas Moxley won this award. The big rearguard had one goal and six assists in the regular season. He also scored a playoff goal against London.

Most Popular Player – Rugged forward Tanner Tomlinson won this honour, which is officially known as the People's Choice Award. Tomlinson had 12 goals and 25 assists.

The Spirit Award – This was shared by second-year defenceman Jeff Paulley and goalie Kyle Washer. Paulley had one goal and nine assists while patrolling the Legionnaires blueline.

Washer won 19 games last season and posted a .900 save percentage.

Volunteer of the Year – Art Turcotte, the club's alumni ambassador, shared this award with Dan McCaffery, the team historian/media liaison person.
