Colts shutout Irish in opening game of LSSAA senior boys rugby
andrew brethauer April 14th, 2011

The St. Clair Colts opened up the senior boys LSSAA rugby season with a 41-0 victory over the St. Patrick Fighting Irish Thursday afternoon.

St. Clair got started early in the first half off an opening scrum, as the Colts run in the try while Denver Spearman kicks the extra points for a 7-0 lead.

The Irish couldn't respond and the Colts would get a second try, but due to windy conditions, their extra kick would go wide of the uprights, leaving the score at 12-0. They would improve the lead to 19-0 as Eric Clarke would get one of his two tries in the game off a pitch fake.

The Irish would maintain control in the late minutes of the first half, moving the ball down field. But a costly cough up of the ball would give it right back to the Colts who would march quickly down field for another try to push their lead to 24-0 after the first half of play.

In the second half the Irish would move the ball well, slowly gaining ground as they broke into the Colt side of the field. But the Colts dug deep and got to the ball carriers quickly, causing the Irish to pitch it off and ultimately lose the ball again. Jimmy Troung would receive a pitch for the the Colts and power his way to another Colt try to up the lead to 31-0.

The Colts would continue their shutout game by using their speed to get to the Irish quickly, causing them not to gain distance on their runs. Dana Chivers would add another try for the Colts to make it a 36-0 game.

With another try off another Irish turnover, the Colts were able to hang on and keep the shutout in tact, going on to the 41-0 victory to open their season 1-0.

Trys for the Colts included two by Eric Clarke, and singles by Ian Van Reenan, Randy Murphy, Ryan Reeb, Dana CHivers and Jimmy Troung, who also added a single conversion kick, while Denver Spearman kicked in two.

St. Clair and St. Patrick's will take on Northern next week, with the Irish playing the Vikings on Monday, April 18th, while the Colts play the Vikings on Wednesday, April 20th. Both games are at Northern.
