The River City Boxing club held a 10 fight card Saturday night at the River City Boxing Centre, with six fights coming from Sarnia, competing against fighters from around Ontario.

In the first fight, Josh Mitchell of Sarnia lost a spilt decision to Daniel Venresca after the two 112lb weight class fighters put in a strong showing to start the night off. The fight went all three rounds, and went to the scorecards with Venresca winning in a 2-1 decision.

Mandy Taylor of Sarnia had the third fight of the night against the number one ranked womens boxer in the province Patti Griffin. Unfortunately for Taylor, ranked third in the province, the fight was stopped after the first round by a doctors decision, deeming Taylor could not continue.

River City would finally see a successful fight, as Matt Smythe took a split decision over Tyresse Nicholas in the 83lbs weight class. The fight went the distance in what was one of the closest fights of the night.

In the second half the the card, Barry Mc Gann of Sarnia had to retire after the first round in his 165lbs weight class fight against Brian Pintegar.

In the second fight in women's boxing on the night, Tarra Nilsson came out with a fury against opponent Janneke Vorsteveld of Goderich, connecting with blow after blow, eventually winning just 1:34 into the first round when the referee stopped the contest to take the second victory of the night for River City.

That momentum looked to carry over into the nights semi-main event, as Dylan Taylor of Sarnia took on Tyrell Nicholas from London. The lively crowd was behind Taylor, as the 135lbs fight went the distance with Taylor picking up an unanimous decision from the judges.

With the win, River City went 3-3 on the night in their six fights.

In the other fights on the card, Marc Pagcaliwangan from London went three rounds with Namah Daghir from Hamilton in the main event with the evenly matched fight ending in a draw.

Ethan Mohan won a unanimous decision over George Al-Koura in the 195lbs weight decision, while Nick Kulesh won a controversial split decision over Cody Crawford. And Andrew Miller and Kyle Farwell competed in an exhibition fight, which was stopped after the first round.

"It was a good turnout," said Mandy Taylor, who helped produce the event while also competing in it. "All the fights were wonderful."

Many of the River City boxers were new up and comers and will lead the way for Sarnia in the ring. Sarnia will be represented at the Golden Gloves in two weeks time. River City could be looking to hold another event in June.
