Penalty Shot Win for the Sting

Travis Konecny
received a rare overtime penalty
shot and he made good of his
opportunity as the Sarnia Sting
beat the Saginaw Spirit 4-3,
before a big Friday night crowd
of 3,702, at the Sarnia Sports
and Entertainment Centre. The
goal was his second point of the
game to go along with a first
period assist.
It was a back and forth battle
between Saginaw and Sarnia with
three lead changes in the game
before it was decided in the
extra session. Charlie Graham
was terrific in net for Sarnia,
as he turned aside 30 saves on
33 shots.
Pavel Zacha also had a goal and
an assist for Sarnia. Anthony
Salinitri and Matt Mistele
scored a goal apiece to aid in
the win. Jordan Kyrou added a
pair of assists.
Mitchell Stephens scored twice
for Saginaw and Brady Gilmour
rounded out the scoring. Tye
Felhaber had two assists.
Goaltender Cameron Zanussi
played good enough to win as he
made 34 saves. Sarnia out shot
Saginaw 38-33.
Saginaw went on top with less
than 8 minutes to go in the
opening period as Mitchell
Stephens beat Graham at 12:59
with the assists going to Tye
Felhaber and Artem Artemov.
Anthony Salinitri got the Sting
even less than two minutes later
with a goal at 14:41. It was
Salinitri 13th of the year, with
the assists going to Nikita
Korostelev and Travis Konecny.
Matt Mistele put the Sting in
front for the first time scoring
at the 16:00 minute mark with
his 29th goal. Pavel Zacha and
Jordan Kyrou drew the assists.
That would be the extent of the
scoring as Sarnia took a 2-1
lead after one period of play.
The shots also favored Sarnia by
a 15-11 margin.
Saginaw tied the game in the
second period as Brady Gilmour
scored at 6:53, from Mike Davies
and Robert Proner. Gilmour’s
goal was the only goal of the
period as both teams skated into
the second intermission tied at
2-2. Saginaw out shot Sarnia
11-9.
It didn’t take long for Saginaw
to get on the board in the final
stanza as Stephens notched his
second goal of the game, 27
seconds into the period.
Felhaber registered the assist,
his second of the game. Sarnia
came right back with a goal of
their own as Zacha scored at
1:01 from Kyrou, who had his
second assist. The game ended in
a 3-3 tie, going into overtime.
Sarnia out shot Saginaw 11-7.
Sting Notebook

Neither team
could muster a power play
goal as Sarnia went 0/2 and
Saginaw 0/4.

The three
stars were, Konecny with the
first star, Zacha was named
second star and Stephens of
the Spirit the third star.

The win over
Saginaw was the fourth for
Sarnia this year against one
loss. The two teams will
meet one final time next
Saturday in Saginaw.

Sarnia’s next
game will be on Tuesday,
March 15th as the travel to
Guelph to take on the Storm.
