The Sarnia Legionnaires held
their own against the best
team in the Western Jr. 'B'
hockey loop Sunday, but
still came away empty
handed.
Coach Mark Davis's club was
edged 3-1 by the powerful
Leamington Flyers. Brendan
Shagena had the lone Sarnia
goal (his first of the
campaign) in the second
period. The tally, which was
assisted by Eric Marsh, tied
the game at 1-1.
But the home team scored two
more goals to skate off with
the victory.
Leamington now sports a
27-4-1 record, giving them
55 points. And that's 11
more than the St. Thomas
Stars and London Nationals,
who are tied for second.
Goalie Shayne Battler gave
the Legionnaires a chance to
win, kicking out 44 shots.
Winning netminder Tyler Wall
faced 19 Legionnaires
drives.
Sarnians P. J. Vandervaart
and Jarret Marks returned to
action after serving
suspensions (Vandervaart
missed six contests and
Marks was sidelined for
two).
There was one fight, between
Legionnaires rearguard Brad
Yowart and Leamington's
Scott Emerson.
Emerson, Mitchell Amante and
Zack Guilbeault scored for
the winners.
With the loss Sarnia's
record falls to 16-13-1-3,
which leaves them in sixth
place in the Western Jr. 'B'
hockey standings, three
points back of the fifth
ranked LaSalle Vipers.
The Legionnaires return to
action Wednesday when they
travel to London to face the
Nationals. They return home
the next night when they
host those same Nationals at
Sarnia Arena. Game time is
set for 7:10 p.m.
