Twenty-four
members of the Sarnia Y Rapids 1
Swim Team competed at the St.
Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL)
swim meet in Blenheim on April
10, with six earning 1st-place
finishes, and another six
finishing in the Top Three in at
least one event.
Eight-year-old
Lauren Armstrong achieved her 1st-place
finish in the 25m breaststroke,
and added two 3rd-place
and a 4th-place
finish. Teammate Diane Clarke,
14, earned her 1st-place
finish in the 100m freestyle,
and came 2nd in the
100m Individual Medley (IM), 4th
in the 50m butterfly and 5th
in the 100m backstroke. Mark de
Guzman, 12, improved each of his
personal best times (PBTs) as he
took 1st place in the
50m butterfly, 3rd in
the 100m breaststroke, 4th
in the 100m IM and 6th
in the 100m freestyle.
Nine-year-old Trevor Marut
finished 1st in the
100m IM, 25m butterfly and 50m
freestyle. Seven-year-old Ali
Page came 1st in her
age group in the 25m backstroke,
butterfly and freestyle, and
added 3rd in the 25m
breaststroke, while Kaiden
Rawson, 13, earned 1st-place
finishes in the 100m
breaststroke and freestyle, and
also came 3rd in the
100m IM and 5th in
the 50m butterfly.
Reaching the Top
Three in at least one event
were: Eileen Carter, 9, with 2nd
in the 25m breaststroke, and a
Top 10 finish in the 100m IM;
14-year-old Greg Dietrich with 3rd
in the 50m butterfly, and two 4th-place
and a 5th-place
finish, with all new PBTs;
Daniel Guo, 11, with 2nd
in the 100m IM and 50m
backstroke, 3rd in
the 100m freestyle and 5th
in the 50m breaststroke; Russell
Oliver, 10, with 3rd
in the 100m IM, 4th
in the 50m backstroke and 5th
in the 50m butterfly and 100m
freestyle; 10-year-old Gabrion
Tulang with 3rd in
the 50m butterfly, 4th
in the 100m IM, 5th
in the 50m backstroke and 6th
in the 100m freestyle; and Ben
Wright, 7, with 2nd
in the 25m butterfly and 3rd
in the 25m backstroke and
freestyle.
Five other
swimmers on the team finished in
the Top Six to earn ribbons in
individual events. Nine-year-old
Kristen Alexander came 5th
in the 50m backstroke and 6th
in the 100m IM and 50m freestyle
for her age group. Kate Bedard,
8, placed 4th in the
100m IM, 50m backstroke and 25m
butterfly, and 5th in
the 50m freestyle, improving
each of her PBTs. Six-year-old
Lauren Carter finished 6th
in the 25m backstroke and
freestyle events. Devan Dyck,
11, came 4th in the
50m butterfly and 100m freestyle
events, and added a Top 10
finish in the 50m breaststroke.
Jessie Hillier, 9, earned 4th
in the 25m breaststroke, and in
the Top 10 in the rest of her
events.
Reaching the Top
10 were: Tyler Murphy, 12, in
the 100m IM (taking more than
nine seconds off his PBT) and
backstroke; Annabelle Rayson,
10, in the 50m butterfly; and
Hayden Wittliff, 11, in each of
his events, while also improving
all of his PBTs.
Also improving
each of their PBTs were Olivia
Conroy, 12, and Isabella Wright,
10. Kylie Thornton, 10, and
Susan Wu, 12, also participated.
The Sarnia Y
Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by
Sue Athanasopoulos. This group’s
season concludes with its
Championship meet, in Windsor on
April 24.
