
The opening game featured a battle of the undefeated teams. This game was
ultimately determined by turnovers as the Vortex prevailed 25-12. The
victors were the beneficiaries of two recovered kick offs and one
interception. Tyler Hopwood put the Vortex on the board first with a 48 yard
touchdown run and a convert. The Sky Fire responded on a 25 yard run by
Gracin Rogers to close the gap to 7-6. Hopwood's second major of the game
staked the Vortex to a 13-6 lead at the half. In the second half, Hopwood
counted his third touchdown and Dylan Moran also ran into the end zone from
3 yards for the Vortex. Connor Cini replied with a touchdown of his own for
the Sky Fire on a 9 yard pass from quarterback Josh Foulis.
In the nightcap the Lanxess Avengers prevailed over the Vidal Pharmacy
Raiders 24-0 in a game that was far closer than the score indicates. Defense
stood tall in the scoreless first half. Joey Edlington put the Avengers on
the board first with a 49 yard run around the right end. The turning point
of this game occurred early in the fourth quarter with the Raiders driving
for the tieing touchdown. Matthew Archer picked up a fumble and ran 90
yards, making it a 2 score game. Zach MacCabe's 52 yard run and Joey
Edlington's second touchdown on a 53 yard pass from Gage Klyne rounded out
the scoring for the Avengers.
