Peewee
Semi Finals
The final two teams playing on championship Saturday has been
decided after a pair of Peewee semi final games.
In the first encounter the Vidal Pharmacy Raiders took on the first
place BrownStones Sky Fire. The first half was a defensive struggle
with the only points coming on a 61 yard run by quarterback Josh
Foulis of the Sky Fire, staking his team to a 6-0 lead. The Sky Fire
increased their lead to 12-0 when Foulis struck again, this time
from the 15 yard line. The Raiders battled valiantly, as they have
done all year and were rewarded when Josh Graham ran 14 yards after
taking a pitch from quarterback Luke LaLonde. The score remained
12-6 until midway through the final quarter when Gracin Rogers
scampered to the house from his own 51 yard line. Mitchell Blais
rounded out the scoring on an 85 yard run earning the Sky Fire 24 -
6 win and a berth in the championship.
The second game was a battle between the Sarnia Lakeshore Optimists
Vortex and the Lanxess Avengers. These two evenly matched teams put
on an outstanding performance. Most of the first half was scoreless
thanks to some huge defensive plays such as when the Vortex defense
turned aside the Avengers just inches short of their goal line
midway through the first quarter. Only later did the enormity of
this stop become apparent. The Vortex counted the first points of
the game on a 1 yard quarterback keeper by Zoey Urquhart with only
2:48 to play in the half. The Avengers responded immediately to this
challenge with a touchdown of their own a minute later, on a 1 yard
run by Nathan Cope, tying the score 6-6 at the half. The Vortex took
the lead again on a 57 yard end around by the speedy Dylan Moran.
The Avengers then mounted a successful drive that ended successfully
when Joey Edlington ran into the end zone from the 5 yard line.
Cope's conversion gave the Avengers their first lead of the game
14-12. With less than 5 minutes remaining the Vortex forged ahead
when Urquhart scored a touchdown, once more on a 1 yard quarterback
sneak. The Avengers had one last chance to win the game, but the
Vortex defense came up big and turned the ball over on downs for a
hard fought 18-14 victory over a determined Avenger team.
