Legionnaires
By Dan McCaffery
Ryan Trottier scored twice
Thursday to lead the Sarnia
Legionnaires to their second
straight pre-season victory.
Trottier – one of only two
veterans in the lineup –
scored with a backhander in
the second period, then
added an insurance marker
early in the third as the
local Jr. 'B' hockey club
upended the Strathroy
Rockets 5-3.
The Legionnaires are now 2-0
in Western Ontario Hockey
Conference exhibition
action. Earlier in the week,
they blanked the St. Thomas
Stars 3-0.
"I thought we played well,
we worked hard for the
second game in a row, which
is nice to see,” assistant
coach Justin Day said
afterward.
Day handled the bench, along
with fellow assistant coach
Tom Norris. Head coach Mark
Davis was out of town.
Day added the club played
well defensively and got
good goaltending from Paul
Town and Nolan Hakr.
In fact, the pair made a
combined total of 32 saves.
The Legionnaires had 42
shots on the Strathroy cage.
Nate Rieman opened the
scoring for the Legion crew
with a powerplay goal.
Rieman scooped up a rebound
and fired home a low drive
from the faceoff circle.
Jarret Marks scored the most
spectacular goal of the
night, streaking into the
clear shorthanded before
beating veteran netman Dane
Gubbels from close range.
But Gubbels was able to turn
back Sarnia's Parker Gilhuly
when he came roaring in
alone on the same penalty
kill.
The Rockets closed the gap
after that, with Noah Tooke
and Wes Kelly both finding
the back of the net to cut
the home team's lead to just
3-2.
But Brock Perry gave the
Legionnaires some breathing
room just 11 seconds after
Strathroy's second goal when
he dented the twine with a
blast from the slot. Not
long after that, Perry just
missed with another drive
from the same position.
The Legionnaires return to
action Sunday when they play
in Strathroy.
