Brock Perry scored twice Tuesday to pace a rookie-laden Sarnia Legionnaires hockey club to a 3-0 victory over the St. Thomas Stars.

Coach Mark Davis's team won the Western Jr. 'B' exhibition game despite the fact that it did not have a single veteran in the lineup. The Stars, meanwhile, dressed eight players who saw action with them last winter.

Perry opened the scoring, lifting a backhander just under the crossbar early in the first period. Austin Bottrell, who was a threat all night, got an assist, along with Derek Johnson, who was a force to be reckoned with on the blueline.

Perry continued his heroics in the third stanza, shovelling a loose puck into the open side of the cage to make it 3-0. The marker, which came with less than two minutes to play, was unassisted.

Johnson had Sarnia's other goal. He came off the point in the middle frame to rifle a low shot past Stars goalie Josh Diamond. Helpers were credited to Jarret Marks and Parker Gilhuly.

Legionnaire netminders Jake Wilkins and Travis Moore split the shutout, making a combined total of 38 saves. The Sarnians had 30 shots on goal.

After the game, which was played before a big crowd at Clearwater Arena, Davis was full of praise for his charges.

"We started a little slow in the first period but, after that, the guys settled right down. Wilkins kept us in the game in the first period. I thought both goaltenders played solid.”

Wilkins made 19 saves in the opening 20 minutes, including three splendid glove grabs.

Asked who else impressed him, Davis said, “I thought they all played well. They came out to compete. It's going to be pretty tough (to make further cuts).”

The Legionnaires return to action Thursday when they host the Strathroy Rockets at Clearwater's red rink. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
