Local Ladies take Bronze at Provincial Lawn Bowling Novice Triples Finals

Sarnia Ladies Sandy Symes, Mary Winter, Sue MacDonald representing District 2 team won a bronze medal when the Ontario Novice Triples Lawn Bowling Championships were held in Sarnia on Sept. 6 and 7.

Sixteen men’s teams and 16 women’s teams from across the province competed in the annual championships, held this year at the Sarnia Lawn Bowling Club. Novice competitions are for bowlers of any age with less than five years of playing experience.

Ladies Gold Medal Champions

 Mary Wesko, Sophie McKeown, Tina Lemon from the Burlington Lawn Bowling Club (District 5) emerged victorious in the women’s final, defeating Kim McNulty, Marina Dranitsaris, Donna Halliday a team out of the Balmy Beach Club in Toronto (District 10). Third place went to the Sarnia Lawn Bowling Club team of Sue MacDonald, Sandy Symes and Mary Winter. (District 2)

in the Semi-final game to District 10 who won Silver in the final game.

The local women swept through three preliminary round games and the quarter final undefeated, before dropping a hard-fought semi final match by one point in the last end. But they rebounded to handily win the bronze medal game. It’s the second consecutive medal for this team at the provincial championships.

A second Sarnia women’s team of Gwen Klatt, Rain Shouldice and Debbie Whitfield was eliminated after preliminary round play.

Men's Gold Medal Champions
David Austen, Jason Currie, Bob Harper

In the men’s competition, it was David Austen, Jason Currie, Bob Harper team from the Windsor Lawn Bowling (District 1) who captured the gold medals, defeating Everett Zwiers, Wayne Wright, Norm Gatt from the Fairmont Club in London (District 2) in the championship game. Bronze medals went to the team of Rusty Ruggles, Stanley Pascoe, Hector Clydesdyle from the Roselawn Lawn Bowling Club in Hamilton. (District 5)

The Sarnia Lawn Bowling Club team of Nick Symes, Grant Collison and Jason Hill won their three preliminary round games, but lost out in the quarter final match.

The championships were held under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Lawn Bowls Association and convened by Bob Machan and Mike Landry of the host club.

The Sarnia Lawn Bowling Club is located in Germain Park off Bright Street. Regular club activities for this year will wrap up on Sept. 20-21.
