Sarnia Beavers Faced off Against Canadian Champions

saturday april 3, 2014

Sarnia's Senior B Lacrosse team had a great start against the Canadian Champions St. Catharines Saints but ended up losing 18 - 13
by game's end.

"In the first two periods we played solid for 35 out of 40 minutes." Coach Nick Trudeau said after the game.  "When we made a mistake they capitalized.  Championship teams don't make mistakes all game long.  We caught them early."

In the first period the Beavers took an 8 - 6 lead but the Saints came back and tied the game 11 - 11 in the second and in the third pulled ahead scoring 6 goals in the third and added one more into the empty net late in the period.

"In the third they didn't turn a ball over they caught us napping." Trudeau said "They got a couple of high picks on us and we were chasing them when we should have been in front of them."

#16 Colin McDowall fights off his attacker and went on and scored his 5th goal.

Colin McDowall led the Beavers with a 6 point night with 5 goals and 1 assist.  Chris Davey scored 2 and earned 3 assists, Kyle O'Donnell added 2 with 1 assist.  Kyle Childerhose scored 1 and assisted on 4.  Jamie Dillon, Jess Thompson and Jeff Sauve each scored 1.  Michael Fleming earned 4 points with 4 assists, Brad Holbrough earned 2 assists and Shan Morlock earned 1 assist.

"We put up 13 we average between 8 to 10 in the last couple of years and to put up 13 against the Canadian Champs it's a positive but I think we could have put up 16 - 17 and ran with them the whole game if we shot the ball better."  Trudeau said.

St. Catharines went three for eleven on the power play, Sarnia scored once on thirteen opportunities.

Greg Krstic went the distance in net, will be in net on Sunday for game 2 against the Saints.

The Beavers are back in action on Sunday for their 2nd game on the weekend against the Saints.

"We actually did well in the face offs that was a big part of the game tomorrow (Sunday) they are going to try and change it up too and we are going to have to match up their intensity and experience."

Sunday's game time is at 2:00 pm at the Clearwater Arena.
