Corunna's Kyle Smith Survives Leadoff Bomb
friday july 11, 2014

Friday night the Corunna Giants U18 Midgets hosted the Essex Major Yellow Jackets. The lead off batter for Essex hit a 350’ home run on Kyle Smiths 3rd pitch of the game! After walking the next batter, who scored on a fielder’s choice three batters later, Smith settled in  nicely and pitched 5 innings of great ball for the win as Corunna beat Essex 8 – 3 Friday night in Courtright.

The home run was the only hit Essex would get all night as Smith ended up with 10 strikouts and 5 walks. Jeremy Devereaux came on in relief for the final two innings striking out 3 and walking 2.

Brett Farr lead the Giants with 3 hits and 2 RBI’s. Kyle Smith helped his own cause with a bases loaded single in the 4th inning that scored 2 runs and an Essex error that allowed another run to score and advanced Smith to second base. Mark McLachlin continued with the hot bat hitting a 2 run double in the first inning that saw Corunna bounce back to take a 4 – 2 lead after one inning of play. Colton Osborne and Alex Machan also had RBI singles in that first inning. Corunna added another run in the sixth inning as Zack Sutherland reached base on an error and advanced to third on two groundouts and then scored on a Brett Farr single up the middle.

Corunna is back in action on Sunday when they travel to Belle River for two games starting at 4:30.
