Monday january 20, 2014

The Petrolia Oilers Midget A team was the only local team to make it to the finals on Sunday and took 2nd place in the Midget A division after taking a 3 - 0 loss against the Ajax Knights.

Heading to the finals the Oilers went 3-0-1.  In the first game Petrolia competed against county rivals Sarnia Jr. Sting MD team and won 8 - 1.  In their second game they edged out Brampton 6 - 5.  Collingwood was a tight game and the two teams ended in a 1 - 1 tie.

With the two wins and a tie the Oilers placed fourth in their division that moved them on to the semi final game that was played on Sunday.  In the Semi finals they met the Sarnia Jr. Sting A  team and it took overtime to decide the winner and the Oilers came out on top with a final score of 3 - 2 that earned a berth in the final game against the Division leaders Ajax Knights where they came up short and lost 3 - 0.

"We had a great tournament and our kids always surprise us." Head coach Bob Gould said "We always said we are going to be in tough for this game and they always seem to surprise and hang in there. It may not be pretty but we hung in there, 2-0, 3-0 here but we didn't get the bounce that we hoped for."

The Knights went 3 - 0 in round robin with wins over Caledonia Thunder (2-0), Dorchester Dragons (4-1), Reston Raiders (7-1).  In the semi finals they shut out the Collingwood Blackhawks 2 - 0 and in the finals 3-0 win over Petrolia.

"This is a great tournament and it's good for our kids to play in it." Gould said "Hopefully they know that the team that we played here today, Ajax, they had speed and skill and that's something that we got speed but our skill needs to get better."
