monday august 25, 2014

In the final day of the OBA Midget C Baseball Tournament hosted by the Corunna Giants, the Giants earned their way to finals but were knocked out by the Essex Majors in the final game.

After going 1 - 1 on Saturday with a 11 - 0 win over Innisfil and taking a 12 - 0 loss against the Essex Majors, the Giants found themselves facing Essex for the second time in the tournament on Sunday.

In the first game on Sunday the Giants took a 2 - 0 win over the Majors. Jeremy Devereaux went the distance on the mound and allowed three hits, walked one allowed no runs and struck out four.  It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning when the Giants scored two runs to take the lead and eventual win.

In the fourth, Joe Stock hit a single to advance to first base then later stole second.  Keenan Smith singled to right field brought Stock home.  Smith worked his way around the bases on a sacrificed fly by Mark McLachlin and a single by Nolan Nicholson.  Lauchie MacDonald brought Smith home on a single to center field.

Both teams recorded one loss apiece and with the tournament double knockout ruling the two teams had to face each other one more time to decide the Championship.

In the final game the Giants came up short and suffered a 7 - 0 loss.  Essex scored four runs in the third then added two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Keenan Smith went five innings on the mound for Corunna allowing six runs walked three and struck out three.  Brett Farr pitched for one inning and allowed one hit, one run and struck out two.

The was the final game of the season for the Corunna Giants.  Corunna played in two leagues with a record of 10-7-1 in the Sun Parlour league and a record of 10-6 in Western Counties.
