Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame Announces Pappy Burr Award Recipients

The Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame presented two awards on Wednesday night at the Sports Hall of Fame located in the Clearwater Arena..  Michaeline Falla and Connor Black are the 2014 recipients of the Ralph "Pappy" Burr Award.  The award is presented to graduating students who best combine athletic and academic excellence with leadership and community involvement.

"It means a lot" Falla said after receiving her award.  "I heard about the award from one of my school teachers and she said that I should apply for it and I thought why not and I did and I'm really grateful that I did."
 

Falla has a long list of athletic accomplished that including Lacrosse, Hockey, Running and Cycling. She has been a member of the London Junior Devilettes since 2011 and was the Captain of the London Junior Devilettes Hockey Team in 2013 to 2014.  Falla was a member of the final 4 Junior Provincial Hockey Team finishing 2nd in the province in April 2013. In Lacrosse Falla was a member of Team Ontario Lacrosse from 2009 to 2011 and won the National Lacrosse Championship competition in Whitby in 2009 and 2010 and in Surrey British Columbia in 2011.  Falla also competed at OFSAA Cross-Country in Sudbury in 2013 and SWOSSA in track and field.

 

Michaeline has been an active volunteer in her community.  She has obtained her Community Coach Development (Tech 1) certification and was the Assistant Coach for the Paperweight Pacers Lacrosse program. She also mentored young hockey players and has volunteered her time in other school activities, lacrosse tournaments and hockey fundraising events.

 

In Academics Michaeline received the Silver Academic Award in Grade 9 and the Gold Academic Award in Grades 10 and 11.  Michaeline is graduating Grade 12 with a 92% average.  In the Fall of 2014 Michaeline will be studying Social Science at Kings Western University in London and she says that she would like to get involved with field lacrosse while attending university.  "Its a new beginning, a new journey."

Long Distance Runner Conner Black also received the Pappy Burr Scholarship award.  Black is from Forest, Ontario and a graduate of North Lambton Secondary School. 
 

"I have been Involved since grade nine started with cross country then track and love them both." Black said  "I think I caught the competitive edge and continued on."

 

At North Lambton Black enjoyed being a part of the hockey, cross country, track and field and math contest teams.  He took pride in being named the cross country team captain in his final year at North Lambton.  Black was selected to Team Ontario 2013 youth track and field team, representing Lambton Shores at the Canadian Legion Championships that were held at Langley, British Columbia.

 

Since grade 9 Black has helped coach and was as a guide runner in the Para-cross country races.  Black has also volunteered his time assisting in school fundraising events, school barbeques, the North Lambton Auction and the North Lambton Colour Run.

 

Black graduated from North Lambton with a 92% average and will be attending Guelph University in September 2014 studying Human Kinetics and will be running on the Cross Country Team.

"I love the sport, I love travelling and meeting new people. It's all that hard work that gives you great satisfaction."

 

The Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremony will be held on Saturday September 27 beginning at 5:30 pm at the Camlachie Community Centre.  Ticket cost $40.00 per person and are available from any Director of the Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame.
