The Sarnia Lady Sting Novice C came away with the Gold Medal at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association Provincial Championship this past weekend in Toronto.

In their first game of the tournament against the Waterloo Ravens, Ella Jackson scored the game winning goal, assisted by Tessa Jackson and Neely Jewell.  It was a tightly fought game and the Lady Sting came out ahead with a 1-0 victory.

The second game was against the Ilderton Jets.  The Sarnia Lady Sting controlled the game with Ella Jackson scoring four goals, Robyn Storey scoring three goals, Sienna Renton scoring two goals, and Kiara MacDonald and Neely Jewell each scoring a goal.  Assists were earned by Neely Jewel (3), Tessa Jackson (2), Felicia Park (1), Mara Draper (1), Robyn Storey (1), Vanessa Toenders (1), Haley Denney (1), Ella Jackson (1), Maya Smith (1), and Sienna Renton (1). Sarnia dominated this game with an 11-1 win.

The two victories in pool play secured Sarnia as the top seed and gave them a bye to advance them to the quarter finals.

In the quarter final game, Sarnia took care of business facing a formidable team, the Chatham Outlaws. Ella Jackson opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Neely Jewel.  The second, and ultimately winning goal, came towards the end of the first with Neely Jewel putting a goal in the back of the net assisted by Ella Jackson.  Chatham entered the game with a goal part way through the second period.  Sarnia followed soon after with a goal scored by Sienna Renton with assists coming from Ella Jackson and Mara Draper.  Seventeen seconds later, Neely Jewel scored her second goal of the game, assisted by Kate Walls. The 4-1 win secured Sarnia a spot in the semi-finals.

The semi-final game would have the Sarnia Lady Sting Novice C facing their league rival, the Petrolia Oilers. Petrolia opened the scoring in the first period with beautiful unassisted goal scored by Amelia Hoven . In the second period, Sarnia scored while shorthanded, with Ella Jackson putting Sarnia back in the game. The third period went scoreless forcing the sudden death overtime. Petrolia opened the overtime with a rush towards the Sarnia net and Ella Ferrera turned away a great opportunity for Petrolia, allowing Sarnia to turn the puck back up the ice towards Petrolia’s net.  Robyn Storey rushed the net with Petrolia’s goalie making a terrific save.  Storey followed up with the rebound, jamming the puck into the net, and sealing Sarnia’s victory with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory to advance the team to the finals.

Sarnia faced the two time defending Champions, Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats, in the Gold Medal Game.  A scoreless first period, kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. Half-way through the second period, Sarnia got their first goal, and eventual game winner, on a rebound shot by Maya Smith and assisted by Ella Jackson and Rhylyn Hicks. An insurance goal came from an amazing deke on the goalie by Ella Jackson assisted by Kate Walls. Sarnia’s lead was padded when Robyn Storey collected a rebound off of Sienna Renton’s shot, and buried it in the back of the net to put the finishing touches on a Sarnia 3-0 victory.

In the five games played in the Provincial tournament, Sarnia girls scored a total of 20 regulations goals and one overtime goal, while goaltender Ella Ferrara earned two amazing shut outs and only gave up a total of 3 goals.
