thursday october 17, 2013, 2013

Two very exciting Peewee Games highlighted the SMAA games on Wednesday evening.

In the opener the first place Rob Simrak Magic Realty Sky Fire tackled the surging Cupe Local 1238 Avengers.  Culminating a 12 minute drive the Avengers struck first on an 11 yard touchdown gallop by Lucas Clubb.  The Sky Fire responded quickly to this score as Avery Smiley sped to the end zone less than 2 minutes later on a 46 yard run.  Clubb's second major, this time from 5 yards out, staked the Avengers to a 12-6 halftime advantage.  In the third quarter Isaac Kidd knotted the score at 12 with a 5 yard run.  Jackson Grasse took the Avengers the length of the field on the ensuing possession and crossed the goal line on a 1 yard plunge.  Zachary Tremblay's convert gave the Avengers a20-12 lead.  This advantage was narrowed to 2 on a 7 yard run by Smiley.  With 5 minutes remaining the Sky Fire started a drive that would give them their first lead of the game.  This drive was stopped by Tremblay's interception.  With time winding down, Clubb scored his third touchdown of the game, giving the Avengers a 26-18 victory.

In the nightcap, the Purdy Fisheries Storm hung on for a 14-12 win over the Optimist Club of Sarnia Lakeshore Vortex.  The Storm opened up a 14-0 haltime lead on 2 touchdowns by Ethan Kerby, one on a nifty 19 yard reverse and the other on an impressive 52 yard run.  Brody Phillip's convert was added to the second touchdown.  The Vortex came roaring back and dominated the second half.  They got on the board 2 minutes into the second half on a 45 yard scamper by Colton Shepherd.  Lucas Kita narrowed the difference to 2 on a 7 yard quarterback keeper with 7 minutes remaining in the game.  After allowing a couple of first downs, the Vortex defense then came up big, stopping the Storm at the Vortex 45 with less than 3 minutes remaining.  The Vortex then began a march down the field but time ran out for them on the Storm 35 yard line.
