Cyclones Ladies Senior Soccer Win LSSAA Title

friday may 24, 2013

The St. Christopher Senior Girls soccer team is going out as the 2013 LSSAA League Champions after they defeated the Northern Vikings 3 - 0 on Thursday on a cold and blistery day.

Since 2005 Northern and St. Christopher have battle for the LSSAA Ladies title and Northern has dominated in most of these years.

"We had won in 2009, lost in overtime last year.  With the school closing it's nice to go out like this." said Cyclones Head Coach Frank Brennan.

"I think the difference was how we played the first half. I was nervous going in, I wanted to have the wind the first half and when we lost (the coin toss) I thought going into the first half at 0 - 0 or even down a goal we would be ok, But the way we played the first half and carried the play to them in the first half, I think was the key to the game."

The score was tied 0 - 0 at the half. With the wind on their backs in the second Machaela Fazzio traveled in and scored the first goal.  Haley Potvin scored the next two goals her first from a cross pass that she tapped in and the final goal was kicked in with a little help from the wind.

"We played as a team and communicated well and moved the ball." said Potvin  "We were in their half most the time. With the wind and the energy was up and we were ready to go."

Carly Pretty earned the shutout win in net for the Cyclones.

"Other key to our season has been our defence." said Brennan "Some games Carly hasn't even gotten a shot, but when she had to make the saves he made them."

The Cyclones will now move on to the semi final round in SWOSSA/AA.  They will host Wallaceburg on Monday at 3:00.  A win will take them to Windsor to compete for the SWAOSSAA title.

Northern will also compete for SWOSSA/AAA on Monday when they host CKSS at 4:00 pm.
